Former Brisbane star Selwyn Cobbo has rolled into Redcliffe for day one of pre-season training, as the latest in a growing list of talent to defect from the Broncos to cross-town rivals, the Dolphins.

In first pictures, Cobbo was all smiles as he hit the training paddock with his new teammates for the first time this week.

The 23-year-old cut a fit, and relaxed, figure as he was put through his paces in a field session, which included running and skills drills.

Cobbo showed no signs of the hamstring injury, suffered in Round 23 against Melbourne, which prematurely ended his season and robbed him of a chance to feature in Brisbane’s premiership-winning finals campaign.

A salary cap squeeze, and falling out of favour, forced Cobbo’s Broncos exit but he won’t have to wait long before taking on his former teammates with the Dolphins set to do battle with the premiers in Round 4 at Suncorp Stadium.

Cobbo is expected to start on the wing in Round 1 against South Sydney, given flyer Jack Bostock will miss the early part of the season with an ACL injury.

But Bostock’s scheduled Round 10 return will turn into a selection headache for Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf.

The goal kicking prowess of Jamayne Isaako, who slotted 117 goals for a strike rate of 88 per cent in 2025, is invaluable to Woolf and will help ensure the sharpshooter will retain his place on the right wing.

It leaves Woolf with a decision between Cobbo and Bostock on the other wing.

A positional shift into the centres for Bostock or Cobbo, where he has played 19 games at NRL level, is also an option.

But that again will give Woolf another selection dilemma, and one that will likely see Jake Averillo squeezed out of the starting side given English international Herbie Farnworth is a guaranteed selection in one centre spot.

Averillo, who is signed until the end of 2026, has been linked with a potential move to the Super League on the back of the positional log-jam in the outside backs.

The 25-year-old is expected to start the season at centre but even if Bostock or Cobbo are eventually preferred in that position, Averillo’s ability to cover in the halves and at fullback will also prove invaluable to Woolf.

Cobbo is the sixth player since 2023 to join the fledgling Dolphins from the Broncos, following in the footsteps of Tom Flegler, Isaako, Farnworth, Tesi Niu and Brenko Lee.

Only late-blooming forward Aublix Tawha, 26, has gone the other way, signing a two-year deal to join the Red Hill club and helping to bolster coach Michael Maguire’s engine room stocks.

At pathways level, however, the Broncos have had some luck in luring a number of young guns away from the Dolphins in recent months.

Rising forward Nate Berrigan – the teenage son of Barry Berrigan and nephew of Broncos premiership winner Shaun Berrigan – has recently jumped ship from the Dolphins to continue his famous name at Red Hill.

Berrigan, who can slot in at lock, hooker and second row, was part of the Dolphins’ Mal Meninga Cup (under-18s) squad in 2025.

While, youngster and Queensland Maroons emerging talent Michael Waqa, who was a highly-touted forward prospect coming through the Redcliffe ranks, defected to the Broncos mid-year.
