NRL legend Jonathan Thurston has come unstuck trying to re-live the glory of his 2015 grand final fairytale.

The former Cowboys superstar’s sideline conversion miss has become part of rugby league folklore as his kick clunked against the far post, sending the decider into golden point extra time.

He famously slotted the match-winning field goal a few moments later, delivering the Cowboys the club’s first ever premiership. That drop-goal was described as a “miracle”.

“It was a miracle kick, extraordinary,’’ Panthers legend Greg Alexander said at the time, pointing out the fact that Thurston didn’t actually strike the ball well.

“It didn’t come out of his hands well. The speed of a field goal in golden point has really ramped up. But it was befitting of the man and the moment.”

On Sunday, Thurston was spotted on the field at Accor Stadium before the NRLW Grand Final lining up from the same spot he did for that fateful his conversion.

It didn’t help that he was wearing leather shoes and dressed in a suit for Channel 9 – and it showed as his kick wobbled across the field to land on the far side of the field nowhere near the goalposts.

Thurston is returning to the scene of his hilarious live TV mistake from last year

where he had a minor brain fart and forgot to hold the microphone to players’ mouths when interviewing Penrith players immediately after their grand final triumph.

The much-loved NRL genius looked filthy at himself when he realised his mistake when he reached across to let Penrith star Isaah Yeo speak into the microphone.
