Versatile outside back Nick Meaney has signed a new deal to stay with the Melbourne Storm until the end of the 2026 season after making a strong start to the year in his new role at right centre.
Meaney joined the Storm in 2022 after stints with Newcastle and Canterbury and has developed into one of their most valuable pieces given he’s filled in at five-eighth, on the wing, at centre and predominantly at fullback while Ryan Papenhuyzen was injured.
The 26-year-old speedster is coming off career highs for games played and points scored in the 2023 season where he chalked up 222 points from 25 appearances at fullback.
“Making the move to Melbourne has been a great decision career-wise and just for life in general,” Meaney said, with his accurate goalkicking proving crucial already this season.
“I really felt at home quickly both here at the club and living in Melbourne. I’ve made a home here with my family and I’m really happy to have my future sorted until the end of the 2026 season.”
Other clubs would have been champing at the bit to sign someone like Meaney, but his decision to recommit is music to the Storm’s ears as they look to build on their impressive start to the season.
“We are delighted that Nick has extended his time with our club,” Storm general manager of football Frank Ponissi said.
“Not only is he a valuable player because of his wonderful versatility in playing in so many positions, but more impressively he has been one of our most consistent and reliable players since he debuted for the club in round 1 2022,” Ponissi said.
“Nick is highly respected by the coaches and his teammates and along with his wife Shania and children Reign and Rome, they have bought into the culture at the Melbourne Storm.”
