Late mail: Adam Reynolds cleared to take on Roosters as Broncos continue to work with veteran on contract extension

The Broncos have made a call on captain and chief playmaker Adam Reynolds ahead of their clash against the Roosters.

Luai to return despite shoulder concern

Broncos skipper Adam Reynolds has been cleared to take on the Roosters on Friday night as the club continues to work on a possible contract extension with the veteran playmaker who showed last week he is playing as well as ever.

Reynolds limped off in the second half of their win over the Wests Tigers with hamstring tightness but is set to play barring any late setback.

“He’s playing. He trained well two days ago and he’ll have captain’s run today and he’ll be up and about,” Broncos coach Michael Maguire said.

“It’s one that we’ve obviously got to manage and monitor, but the boys here and the medical staff were really strong on what they know and what they’ve dealt with with Reyno, so he’s good to go.

“They did the scan and they know exactly what they’re dealing with. Reyno is feeling really confident with how he’s training and what he’s doing, so we’re looking forward to having him out there.”

Reynolds, 34, is off contract at the end of the season but is keen to play on.

He has spent the past four seasons in Brisbane after leaving the Rabbitohs because they were reluctant to offer him a long-term deal, and he’s proved them wrong as he remains one of the best playmakers in the NRL.

He nailed a two-point field goal and then scored a stunning chip and chase try last week before he came off, with Reynolds combining brilliantly with Ben Hunt.

“I’ve known ‘Reyno’ for a long time and I’ve got a good relationship with him,” said Maguire, who handed Reynolds his debut in 2012.

“We’ve talked for years since he was an 18-year-old when he first debuted, so to think he’s potentially playing his 300th (game) in time is still in front of him as well. It’s amazing over the years how he’s shown his resilience.

“I want everyone that’s here, and we’ve got to work around that. It’s happening in every club and every club is dealing with various salary cap decisions, and we’re no different.

“We have close conversations with all our players.

“It’s never been my case of thinking that he could retire. If you’re playing well, then you keep on going. The biggest thing about where Reyno’s at is playing well tomorrow night, and that’s the most important thing now.

“He’s an experienced player and he’s been around long enough to know that when you’re having conversations with the organisation that they’re ongoing.

“The most important thing for us right now is tomorrow. He’s got a big opportunity this year, and he knows that. Tomorrow night is the most important game of our lives.”

If Reynolds does stay, then young gun Coby Black will have to bide his time a little longer, with Maguire hoping the emerging playmaker acts like a sponge to absorb as much knowledge as he can.

Black has been touted as the future of the club where he’ll play alongside superstar Reece Walsh, who has been well contained this season.

There’s a suggestion rival clubs have worked him out through extensive video analysis, but Maguire has warned other teams that they’ll be punished on the scoreboard if they focus solely on the Broncos fullback.

“If you look at the game, everyone is studying everyone (else),” he said.

“When you’ve got a player like Reece, you’ve got to do a little bit more when you’re playing against a player like that.

“Reece is well ahead of that stage with what he does in the background. He’s got to evolve his game like every player.

“I think that’s part of the evolution of any player that’s in his shoes where you’ve got a fair bit of attention.

“People can put their attention on him, but we’ll go attack somewhere else.”
