‘I’m still motivated’: Luke Keary signs on with the Roosters for another 12 months

Luke Keary has shut down any talks of retirement by signing a new deal with the Roosters on the eve of their historic game in Las Vegas.

The Roosters may be losing some of their biggest stars next year, but they have received a boost for 2025 with veteran playmaker Luke Keary agreeing to stay with the club for another 12 months.

The former representative star has been with the Roosters since 2017 after he started his career at the Rabbitohs, and he made an almost immediate impact on the club by winning the Clive Churchill Medal in 2018, with Cooper Cronk severely limited due to a broken scapula he carried into the grand final.

The 32-year-old has had his issues with concussion over the past few seasons, but he played 26 games in 2023 and looked a lot more comfortable when he shifted from halfback to his preferred five-eighth role.

“I’m really happy to extend with the Roosters for another year. I’m still motivated to keep getting better as a player and we’ve got a great crew here, so I’m excited about what we can achieve over the next few years,” Keary said.

Keary has won three titles – two of those with the Roosters – and will again partner Sam Walker in the halves when the Tricolours open their season against the Broncos in Las Vegas on Sunday.

The champion playmaker’s decision to extend his stay with the club is important given Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii is heading to rugby union next year and is expected to be joined by superstar centre Joseph Manu.

“Luke is our vice-captain and he is always pushing both himself and those around him to be better, so it’s great to have him locked in for another year,” Roosters coach Trent Robinson said.
