It’s been revealed two-time premiership winner Des Hasler was one of the lower-paid coaches in the NRL while at the Sea Eagles.

Hasler, who is now the Titans coach, is suing Manly after he was sacked 12 months ago in the fallout of the club’s infamous pride jersey saga.

The 62-year-old coached the Sea Eagles between 2004 and 2011 before making a shock move to the Bulldogs just days after winning the grand final.

Hasler led Canterbury to two grand finals before a messy exit in 2017 and he returned to Brookvale for the 2019 NRL season.

In his first season back at Manly, Hasler’s base salary was $680,000 which was to be bumped to $720,000 in 2023 and 2024, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The top coaches in the NRL, including Wayne Bennett, Craig Bellamy and Trent Robinson all earn over $1 million per season.

Halser also had an ambassador role at the club worth about $200,000 a season, with the money paid into a business that was co-owned by Hasler and his wife - according to the report.

Hasler’s 2023 option would have automatically triggered if Manly made finals last year but they finished 11th following the pride jersey fiasco and the coach was sacked before he had the chance to begin the 2023 season.

Hasler was reportedly entitled to a lump-sum payment of half his base pay plus ambassador fee as part of his termination, but he is claiming he missed the chance to earn an extension because the club’s season fell apart after the rainbow jersey debacle.

In documents lodged with the Supreme Court, Manly dismissed claims the rainbow jersey debacle cost Hasler the chance to lead the club to the finals, pointing out there were other issues at play like form and injuries.

The Titans will be dragged into legal battle, with Manly set to subpoena club powerbrokers as part of their defence, according to The SMH.

The Sea Eagles reportedly plan to subpoena the phone and email records of Titans officials in a bid to avoid a hefty payout to Hasler.

The case begins in the Supreme Court on Friday.
