Canberra duo Hudson Young and Morgan Smithies have been rewarded for fronting up and facing the music over their stoush in Las Vegas after the NRL wholly suspended fines handed down to the pair over their elevator tiff.
The NRL confirmed on Monday afternoon that the duo had been sanctioned, although it is understood the fines were suspended given the integrity unit considered the skirmish was at the lower end of the scale and the players quickly fronted up to acknowledge their stupidity.
Young and Smithies came to blows in the elevator of their hotel in Las Vegas after arguing over their rooms. The pair were initially evicted from Resorts World after security mistook an inflatable baseball bat for a weapon.
They were eventually allowed back in the hotel and fronted the media to apologise after the incident was reported by the media.
The NRL took their quick mea culpa into consideration as they handed down small fines - believed to be as little as $2,500 for each player.
The NRL also acknowledged that the incident took place in the privacy of the team hotel and not in the public domain in reaching their decision.
Smithies and Young went on to play starring roles as the Raiders opened their season in Sin City with a win over the Warriors. They backed that up last weekend as they put the Brisbane Broncos to the sword.
The NRL released a statement on Monday revealing the pair had been fined after breaking the game’s code of conduct.
“The breach notice alleges the players engaged in conduct which has brought the game and their club into disrepute,” the NRL said.
“The NRL recognises that the players provided a public apology and have accepted responsibility for their actions.
“In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the RLPA, information concerning the NRL’s proposed sanction will not be disclosed until the players have had the opportunity to respond to the alleged breach and the matter is finalised.”
The players have five days to respond to the breach notice.
