Brisbane Broncos opt out of Reed Mahoney race

The Broncos have ruled themselves out of the race for Reed Mahoney, who was spotted dining with Bulldogs royalty this week.

There’s several clubs that are interested in the services of Parramatta’s star hooker Reed Mahoney, but the Brisbane Broncos are not one of them.

Mahoney comes off contract at the end of 2022 and his manager has been fielding interest from rival clubs despite an Eels offer on the table reportedly worth $1.3 million over three years.

Despite initial contact with Mahoney’s manager, the Broncos have confirmed they won’t be going any further with the 23-year-old.

“Reed won’t be coming here,” Broncos’ football director Ben Ikin told News Corp.

“There was a conversation between the club and Reed’s agent, which I think has happened with multiple clubs.

“Reed was a name on a list with every other high-profile player coming off-contract, but at this stage we are very happy with what we have got in the hooking position.

“We’ve got Jake Turpin and Cory Paix so we’re happy with what we have on our list. We want to get the best out of the players we have got.”

That now leaves the Dolphins — who are keeping an eye on the Queensland Origin prospect — and the Bulldogs.

Mahoney was spotted dining with Canterbury’s head coach Trent Barrett, chairman John Khoury and football general manager Phil Gould earlier this week.

No Red Hill lifeline for Ex-Raider

Another player that won’t be going to the Broncos is one-time Maroons prop Dunamis Lui.

The 31-year-old was not re-signed by the Raiders for 2022 and was eyeing a switch to Queensland Cup.

However a lifeline emerged earlier this month when Ikin told AAP that the club was in discussions about signing Lui.

But the discussions haven’t progressed any further with Ikin confirming to News Corp that Lui won’t be joining the Broncos.

“We were keen to do something with Dunamis but things have fallen through, so he is weighing up his future options,” he said.
