New Norfolk’s SFL resurrection has begun with the announcement of former Brighton and North Hobart player Dylan Ford as the club’s new senior playing coach.
The former Southern Football League powerhouse struggled throughout 2023, finishing last with a 0-13 record, in what was one of the club’s toughest years in recent memories.
But the signing of the hard-nosed midfielder looks like the first step in returning the Eagles to their former glory.
New Norfolk said Ford would bring a “fresh approach to the club’s rebuild strategy”.
“Injuries and player availability plagued last season and as part of the rebuilding program and Dylan is committed to securing the services of players as well as developing the talent and skills that are paramount with the rebuilding process,” the club said in a statement.
“Dylan will bring to the role his experience as a player and coach who is renowned as a hard taskmaster who sets high standards both on and off the field.
“This culture change focus is part of the rebuilding process and is welcomed by many long-term club supporters.”
A longtime Brighton player and assistant coach, Ford also led the club’s women’s side to premiership success in 2019 before making the step-up to the Tasmanian State League with the Demons in 2021.
Injury cruelled his time at North Hobart Oval though, playing just five games before returning to the Robins in 2022.
While he admitted the rebuild at Boyer Oval wouldn’t be a simple task, the 28 year-old said he was confident the side could return to the top-end of the SFL ladder.
“I’m honoured to be appointed as senior coach for New Norfolk and trust that I can build on the strategy the club has in place to rebuild and gain success on the field for a club that has such a long and proud history,” Ford said.
“It won’t be easy, however I’m confident that with the support of the talented playing group and their commitment we can make a difference.”
Vice-president Chris Lovell added that Ford’s appointment was a key pillar in the club’s long-term future.
“To have Dylan signed on as senior coach for 2024 is a major part of the club’s long term strategic plan and we welcome Dylan’s commitment to the New Norfolk Football Club.”
The Eagles will kick off pre-season training on Wednesday November 15 at Boyer Oval.
