THE NBL has downplayed a potential leak of the nickname of Tasmania’s NBL team a week before the official revelation.

The race for the moniker of the league’s 10th franchise has been whittled down to two options – Jack Jumpers and Tridents – with the unveiling to take place next Thursday.

However social media sites were sent into a flurry this morning when previously unseen Jack Jumpers branding surfaced on what appeared to be the team’s website development page.

The web page, which contained a story on plans being approved for the upgrade of the Derwent Entertainment Centre, has since been shut down.

Mock up graphics of the five short-listed names were made public when the countdown began three weeks ago, but the Jack Jumpers image was a more detailed logo.

Team Tasmania chief executive Simon Brookhouse, currently serving his two week quarantine requirements in Devonport having arrived in the state from Victoria, denied any hints being dropped by the NBL on its own accord.

Brookhouse said the league’s graphic design team has done extensive work with all of the potential nicknames.

“We’ve gone through a very exhaustive process to find a name including asking the people of Tasmania what they want,” he said.

“We’ve looked at and tested a wide range of names, logos and colours as you’d expect and there’s been a lot of speculation about what the name might be.

“We believe we have two very strong names in the Tridents and Jack Jumpers on the shortlist and we look forward to announcing the final name next week.”

Foundation memberships for the 2021-22 NBL season will also be launched next week.
