Supercars will honour the greatest drivers and machines to conquer Mount Panorama when the Great Race celebrates its 60th anniversary next month.

Six decades after the famous endurance race was born at Australia’s most iconic racetrack, Supercars will pay homage to Bathurst’s legendary cars and drivers as part of its milestone celebrations.

Some of the race’s most celebrated cars will return to the track for a demonstration paying tribute to the event’s history.

Larry Perkins’ 1993-winning VP Holden Commodore, the BA Falcon Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup drove to their famous 2006 victory, the 1986 VK Commodore Peter Brock shared with Allan Moffat and Jim Richards’ 1990 Nissan Skyline are among the cars which will be honoured on track.

Bathurst-winning drivers Mark Skaife, Perkins, Lowndes and Whincup will be among the V8 greats celebrated.

“We are thrilled to be bringing some of Bathurst’s most storied drivers and cars together in commemoration of an incredible six decades of history at Mount Panorama,” Supercars chief executive Shane Howard said.

“Bathurst is of course one of the great circuits in world motorsport and the Repco Bathurst 1000 is its crown jewel.

“Celebrating an iconic milestone at such an iconic event with so many prized pieces of history will make for a truly memorable occasion.

“These very special displays with some of Bathurst’s most beloved cars and names are a tremendous way to celebrate over 60 years of history.”

This year’s event also marks the 45th anniversary of the first top-10 shootout, which was topped by the late, great Brock in 1978.

Iconic shootout cars will also be on show for next month’s race at Mount Panorama from October 5-8.

The first endurance race at Mount Panorama was a 500-miler in 1963, won by Harry Firth and Bob Jane in a Ford Cortina GT.

The famous race was extended to 1000 km in 1973 when Allan Moffat claimed his third win at the mountain.

Triple Eight combination Broc Feeney and Whincup will be among the early favourites for this year’s race after their win in the Sandown 500.

Shane van Gisbergen will team with Richie Stanaway for his Bathurst 1000 defence in his last assault at Mount Panorama before he makes the switch to NASCAR next year.
