Cam Waters fumes at ‘embarrassing’ Supercars ‘drama’ amid Bathurst nightmare

One of the most consistent drivers at the Bathurst 1000 has slammed an “embarrassing” Supercars farce that’s become all too obvious.

Shane Van Gisbergen hints at future Supercars return

You’ve got to feel for Cam Waters.

One of the most consistent drivers at the Bathurst 1000 in recent years, the Tickford Racing driver had finished second, second and third in the past three years.

But his run of podiums at Mount Panorama came to an end on Sunday as Shane van Gisbergen claimed his second Bathurst win as the three-time Supercars champion prepares to race in NASCAR next year.

Waters was third fastest in Saturday’s Top 10 Shootout but his Ford Mustang was off the pace in the 161-lap race proper.

The 29-year-old told the Supercars broadcast he was frustrated by his car’s lack of straight line speed as he struggled to keep up with the faster Chevrolet Camaros.

Asked by Greg Murphy to assess his opening stint of the race, Waters said: “It was OK. Not a bad start but not a great start and just needed that slipstream as long as I could. Probably blew the rear tyre a little bit towards the end there.

“But we are a sitting duck down the straight. It’s actually embarrassing how bad it is.”

Waters’ comment didn’t go unnoticed by Supercars fans, who have lamented the lack of parity between the Mustangs and Camaros this year.

This season a Camaro has won all but two of the races, with the superior 5.7 litre V8 outperforming the Mustang’s 5.4 litre engine.

Supercars is known as a ‘parity’ motorsport category where one car isn’t supposed to have an unfair advantage and changes are allowed to be made mid-season.

The disparity between the vehicles could see Ford leave Supercars as soon as next season.

The day got even worse for Waters when his co-driver James Moffat scraped their car into the wall at the Dipper, effectively ruining their race.

“Heavy contact!” commentator Neil Crompton said.

“This just goes to show how risky this place is – the slightest hiccup in your rhythm and you eat concrete.

“The thing came to a grinding halt.

“What a horror story here for Moffat and Waters.”

A gutted Moffat said: “I just clipped the inside wall at the Dipper then that just fired me into the outside wall. Hugely disappointed by I know I’m not the first person to do something like that and I won’t be the last.

“Disappointed in myself. I pride myself in not making errors like that. I’m sorry for all the team, the guys. We’re definitely fighting with both hands tied behind our back. It’s tough out there but that’s no excuse for what I did.”

Waters said: “It’s what Bathurst is all about – it throws everything at you.

“Moff was doing an unbelievable job … He’s been great this enduro season.

“He’ll be pretty dirty on himself.”
