New Zealander Matthew Payne held on to win for Grove Racing in a Ford Mustang, with co-driver Garth Tander, 48, claiming a sixth Bathurst victory, 25 years after his first. The duo started 18th on the grid and made the most of the chaotic finish to the race.
James Golding actually crossed the line first but he copped a five-second penalty for bumping into Cooper Murray, who had been leading the race in the dying stages.
The penalty meant David Reynolds and Lee Holdsworth finished second after starting the race 15th on the grid.
Pole sitter Brodie Kostecki had been on track to claim back-to-back Bathurst wins until he came unstuck late in the race, losing control in two separate incidents to ruin his chances.
Kostecki and Cam Waters went head to head in a thrilling sequence of racing at the top of the mountain, but Waters’ hopes were cruelled when his co-driver crashed into the barrier after a tyre change.
The carnage continued when championship leader Broc Feeney crashed out of the race with less than 40 laps to go. Reigning Supercars champion Will Brown also crashed out.
As the contenders crashed out, it looked like the unheralded pairing of Ryan Wood and Jayden Ojeda would win, only for their Walkinshaw Andretti United car to fail due to a suspected crank sensor issue.
The closing stages of the race descended into total carnage in the wet weather, as countless cars crashed out.
Earlier, favourite Chaz Mostert became a Bathurst icon after cracking open a beer when mechanical failure ended his race early.
