After claiming victory during the Dutch Grand Prix, Norris has closed the gap to 70 points on his rival with McLaren now only 30 behind Red Bull in the constructors standings.

But it was after he secured his second win of the season when Norris decided to deliver a rather cheeky message aimed at his rival.

Shortly after taking the chequered flag, over the team radio Norris uttered three words: “Simply lovely huh”.

The radio message is one often deployed by Verstappen after he secures a race win, but Norris decided it was his turn.

The three words ignited a firestorm on social media with fans split on the British driver pouring fuel on the fire.

One irate fan wrote on X: “This overrated rocket ship merchant driver throwing shade he will never be respected like his owner Verstappen.”

Formula 1 God wrote: “Norris in his villain arc.”

A third added: “Absolutely dunked on Max in his home race. Love to see it.”

A fourth wrote: “Lando norris they will never make me like you.”

The latest shot adds to the ongoing on track rivalry between the duo which came to a head during the Austrian Grand Prix.

The normally chummy duo came to blows in the dying stages of the race when Verstappen took out Norris on lap 64.

Red Bull’s three-time champion was adjudged to have caused the accident by swerving to his left to hit Norris’s McLaren causing punctures to both cars.

Verstappen managed to pit and finish fifth, despite receiving a 10-second penalty for his reckless driving, but Norris retired after limping to the pits in his damaged car.

The feud is only set to grow as the championship race between the pair heats up as the second half of the 2024 season continues.

The Formula 1 paddock will now head to Monza for the famous Italian Grand Prix with lights set to go out at 11pm (AEST) on Sunday, September 1.
