MAKING his BBL debut in his home state as an opposition player was a weird feeling for David Moody, but the big quick embraced the challenge on Friday night.
The West Australian native, who had his entire Big Bash tournament wiped out last summer through injury, was handed his maiden appearance for the Hurricanes against his state teammates at Perth Stadium.
Though slightly expensive, Moody finished with 2-43 from his four overs and pulled off a brilliant run out via a direct hit at the non-striker’s end after collecting the ball and throwing on the spin in his follow-through to catch Aaron Hardie short. It was part of a three-wicket over, which left Moody on a hat-trick when Sam Whiteman holed out to deep square leg and Will Bosisto edged behind.
“Very special, obviously I had a few friends and family here which is great. It was a bit weird, they probably expected to come in orange but I told them it had to be purple,” Moody said.
“But being in Perth and being part of a win was awesome. “It was very strange, the only time I bowl to them usually is in a net session, but in a way that was comforting because I knew what I could and couldn’t do.
“At the same time, it is an intimidating stadium — the Perth fans are incredibly loud.”
The Hurricanes’ other debutant, Caleb Jewell, also made an immediate impact in his first T20 start.
Jewell, who has plundered runs for Hobart’s academy side in the past two seasons, scored a fluent 32 from 20 balls batting at No. 3, providing some early momentum when the visitors lost gun opening duo Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short in the powerplay.
“It was a pretty amazing night to be honest … what an initiation in front of 35,000,” Jewell said.
“Surprisingly I wasn’t too bad [with the nerves], I have been through the situation in my head so many times, it probably wasn’t a bad thing to get out there real early and I guess have a bit more time.
“I just think it was one of those nights where I got a couple away and got going.”
The Hurricanes flew to Adelaide yesterday and will meet the Strikers tonight in a replay of last year’s final.
