IS modern star Jaye Bowden the greatest Magpie of all outside Hall of Fame legend Peter Hudson?

Certainly Glenorchy coach Paul Kennedy thinks so.

As the Magpies celebrated their 100th birthday last night with a gala dinner, Kennedy said Bowden deserved the accolade after a highly decorated career that included a record six club best and fairests, a TSL best three league best and fairests and three TSL leading goal kicking awards.

His brilliance kicked off the Pies celebrations as Bowden booted eight in a best afield performance on Friday night as Glenorchy thrashed old enemy Clarence by 70 points.

“Just the fact I mentioned him alongside Peter Hudson tells you how great he is,” Kennedy said.

“There is never going to be another ‘Huddo’ but the fact that he’s a pretty good Robin to that Batman tells you where he’s at.

“This year we’ve managed his body and given him roles to allow him to get through, but against Clarence we played him in his A spot and he showed what he’s still capable of at 30 years of age.

“He was unbelievable.”

Glenorchy has had some of the state’s very best wear the famous black and white including Danny Ling, Gary Linton, Michael Styles, Ben Aitken, Darryl Sutton and Neil Conlon to name but a few so to lift Bowden above those is a big statement but not without merit.

Kennedy said his side had embraced the celebrations but also wanted more success.

“The players know what it is all about. They’ve bought in so much to this and we say to them we want to write some history ourselves. There are some greats in our past but there are great footballers now.’’
