The Tassie Tigers can credit the late Craig Keegan for planting the seed as their star women’s recruits arrived in Hobart to strengthen our Hockey One League hopes.
Great Britain Commonwealth Games and World Cup representative Kathryn Lane and fellow Brit Lucy Millington have landed at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre and instantly been impressed with the Tigers program.
Lane, who holds 17 international caps and captained England at Junior World Cup level, says she learned a lot about the island state of Tasmania from Keegan.
“Craig coached me with the England under-21s and at Belper Hockey Club, where a couple of the Tassie Tigers girls have also spent a club season, and I’ve heard about his impressive career as a player with the Tigers” Lane said.
“Since Craig passed away earlier this year, I love the thought of continuing that link between Tasmanian hockey and Belper Hockey.”
After initially being chased by HC Melbourne, Lane’s first impressions of the Tassie Tigers set up has reinforced her signing with the Apple Isle.
“Tim is a very knowledgeable coach and he takes each players circumstances into consideration, making decisions on what is right for each individual,” Lane said.
“It’s also a close knit, hardworking and super friendly group of women and the Hockey One League is a great initiative to play exciting hockey and create a fan base in each state while making the sport more watchable.”
After claiming a Victorian Premier League title with Camberwell Hockey Club last month, Lane hopes her playing style will mirror the traits of successful Tasmanian sides of any code.
“I’m not a flare player, so don’t expect to see me taking on ten players and scoring in the top corner!”
“But hopefully Tigers fans will see me as a reliable presence in the heart of defence, helping to organise the squad, being fully committed and nailing the basics.”
Millington, a former Great Britain Development player, is a skilful midfielder that was pursued by HC Melbourne before committing to the Tigers program.
The 24-year-old scored five times for KBH Brumbies in the Victorian Premier League competition and will add experience to complement the likes of Hockeyroo Maddi Brooks, Sarah McCambridge and Philly Bridley.
The Tassie Tigers open their Hockey One League campaign this Friday night from 6:30pm against HC Melbourne, with the men following at 8pm.
