Point to Pinnacle 2021

MORE than 3000 runners converged to Hobart’s Wrest Point on Sunday morning for the running of the 27th Point to Pinnacle fun run.

The state’s largest fun run is billed as the toughest half marathon in the world as it not only requires entrants to complete 21.1km but to climb over 1200m from Sandy Bay to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

After last year’s event was held virtually through fitness app Strava, race director Tim Smith said it was great to welcome people back in person.

“It’s unbelievable to be back,” Mr Smith said.

“The vibe up here on the mountain is amazing and you can see people are just so happy it’s back.

“People are hugging and high-fiving each other and you can definitely see the joy the event brings out.”

Due to public health guidelines, the start line for this year’s event was moved to the Wrest Point carpark, which Mr Smith said went seamlessly.

“The new starting areas worked really well, which was great,” he said.

“The way it was set up created a big long snake and mass of people and as we saw them go out and start the race it was a pretty spectacular sight.”

Hobart’s Nick Earl took the honours in 1hr23min46sec in the men’s field, while in the women’s it was former winner Meriem Daoui who crossed the line in 1hr48min8sec.

The 10km Point to Pub event also returned this year, taking participants from Wrest Point to the Fern Tree Tavern.

Reece Harris took out the men’s Point to Pub in 39min6sec with Anna Smee the first female across the line in 44min57sec.
