THE Australian supercars championship’s most precious cargo — the V8-powered Fords, Holdens and Nissans — touched down in Burnie today in readiness for Tasmania’s biggest sporting event this weekend.
Most of the drivers arrive tomorrow and will head straight to Symmons Plains Raceway for their pre-race track walk with their engineers and tacticians ahead of the third round of the championship, following rounds in Adelaide and Melbourne.
The Tasmanian round attracted more than 55,000 motorheads last year, bringing the total attendance for the past seven years to 372,203.
Supercars Australia’s operations manager Shane Howard said it was a “military operation” to get the supercar circus to Tasmania — the only time the trucks are shipped anywhere.
The supercar trucks have their annual parade through the streets of Launceston from 3pm to 4.30pm today.
The route for viewing the parade is on the Southern Outlet into Launceston and through CBD along Bathurst Street, through to Invermay along East Tamar Highway heading north, before looping around at the George Town Rd turn-off past the Black Stallion Hotel for the return trip back through Invermay along East Tamar Highway through CBD on Wellington St through CBD.
The supercars have practice on Friday, followed by practice, qualifying and racing on both Saturday and Sunday.
