TAROONA women’s soccer players were over the moon last night when they learned they would be joining the state Women’s Super League this season as part of an expansion of the game by Football Tasmania.
Senior women’s coach Karen Wills broke the news to her charges on the training track and said they would be raring to go for their opening game on March 20.
“It has been a lot of work for us,” Wills said.
“We’ve spent the past two years rebuilding with the aim of making into the Super League on the back of our strong development program.
“For a number of years we’ve had strong female participation _ close to 50 per cent women in both youth and seniors _ and we have built on that.
“We’ve got a great mix of experience and young players and we’re very excited to be back at the top level of competition.”
Football Tasmania chairman Bob Gordon said women’s soccer was healthy around the state and growing the game was a top priority.
“We’ve expanded our Women’s Super League to make it a truly statewide competition,” Gordon said.
“As part of the pathway, we will hopefully expand it to eight teams by the Women’s World Cup in 2023.
“We have added Devonport, Launceston United and Taroona to Women’s Super League and we are excited about the strength of the game, particularly the women’s game, in Tasmania.
“We are by far the biggest participation game in the state and we have the highest participation rate of women anywhere in Australia.
“We are headed toward a Women’s National Premier League competition, which is the next level up, and the next three years will see us get there in time for the Wold Cup.”
