THE Hobart Chargers kicked off their 2021 recruitment drive by signing power forward Ellie Collins, whose goal is to push her hometown team to the finals this season.
After playing with the Hobart Huskies, then signing with Launceston without playing a game in a coronavirus-cancelled 2020 season, Collins is champing at the bit to back on the court, particularly at the team’s new home base at Kingborough Sports Stadium.
“I love playing for Hobart with the home crowd, and being a local girl it always means a lot to play for Hobart,” she said.
“I know a lot of people here so it’s always great playing in front of people you know.
“I went to Launceston to go to uni and I’ve just secured a teaching contract down here, so it made sense to stay in Hobart.”
As the Chargers’ first signing – men’s or women’s – for the basketball reboot, Collins has high hopes.
“Everyone wants to win a championship so that’s the ultimate goal,” Collins said.
“Working together and being a team on court, that will be the first goal.”
Just to be playing has put a spring in the step of the talent shooter and powerhouse rebounder.
“It’s exciting because the season was cancelled last year everyone is itching to get back on court,” she said.
“Due to COVID and having the season off, everyone got to work more on thing they wouldn’t normally get to work on – fitness and ball-handling.
“Everyone is excited to get back to playing.
“Kingborough is a good stadium. Everyone plays here in the local league on a Wednesday night so it is not a new stadium for anyone.”
