It’s now 13 out of 13 for Drummoyne’s men, but they had a devil of a time shaking off the threat of the Marlins. There was some success for the team from over in the west though. Relive all the action.

A five-goal first quarter proved decisive as Australian Water Polo League men’s leaders Drummoyne stretched their unbeaten record to 13 games with an impressive 13-9 victory over Fremantle Mariners.

Blake Edwards scored twice while Tristan Glanznig, Charlie Kospetas and Leo Hurley also found the net as the Devils got the jump on their rivals to take a three-goal advantage into the first break.

Sitting just outside the top six, Fremantle presented a more formidable opponent in the final three quarters, but the damage had already been done.

Edwards ended with four goals while Guillem Garcia Urzainqui grabbed a final quarter double.

Drummoyne Devils v Fremantle Marlins (Women)

Goalkeeper Izzy Scott proved the hero as Fremantle Marlins held their nerve in a tense penalty shootout against Drummoyne Devils to continue their march towards the Australian Water Polo League women’s finals.

Scott, who is furthering her water polo career at Stanford University in the US later this year, wrestled the momentum from the home side with a great save from the last of the Devils’ first five penalties as the Marlins took a thriller 14-13.

The defeat was hard on the Devils who rallied superbly in the final quarter to force the game into the shootout.

Down 9-6 after Glencora McGhie scored just seconds into the final quarter, Drummoyne piled on the pressure and were rewarded with goals from Gabby MacDonald and a double from Morgan De Jersey.

Stephania Haralabidis and Jessica Zimmerman both scored three goals for the Marlins.

The flashy Fremantle Marlins are staring down the barrel of a gruelling four-day road trip which could put them on top of the Australian Water Polo League.

With US sharpshooter Stephania Haralabidis leading the charge upfront, the Marlins sit only one win behind women’s frontrunners Queensland Thunder.

A four-day stretch in which they face Drummoyne Devils and ACU Cronulla Sharks twice each could provide the perfect launch pad to send the Marlins above their rivals.

The first of those four games, against the Devils, will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of our coverage of the AWL season. The Marlins will kick off the double header at 7.30pm on Thursday, before the Fremantle Mariners take on Drummoyne in men’s action.

While they are a clear form side of the AWL this season, the Marlins will be wary heading into the gruelling trip east after they split the results the last time they faced a four-game stretch on the road.

Stephania Haralabidis has been on song in the Australian Water Polo League this season.

Those two losses, which came against UTS Balmain Tigers and Sydney Uni Lions a fortnight ago, are the only losses the girls from the west have endured this season.

If the Marlins can escape with all four wins this weekend, it will set up two mouth-watering showdowns with the Queensland Thunder in the final two rounds of the regular season on April 13-14.

Fremantle attacking weapon Haralabidis has been in incredible form this season as she aims to stake her claim for a spot on the US team determined to defend its Olympic gold in Paris in July.

Along with twin sister Ioanna, who is also at the Marlins for a second-straight season, Haralabidis has led the competition in goal scoring with 45 goals in 13 matches. Ioanna is also in the top 20 goal scorers in the league with 22.

Haralabidis is almost in a league of her own on the goal scoring front, with only UWA Torpedos gun Pippa Pedley (43 goals) keeping pace with the Marlins sharpshooter.

The long road trip could also prove to be make or break for the Mariners men, who sit two wins outside of finals contention and up against the undefeated Drummoyne outfit.
