Tasmania Netball League live stream: Ash Mawer calls new Hawks teammate Ellie Marshall big MVP threat (Tasmanian Netball League)

They may have lost two club legends and changed their coach, but star Hawks goal shooter Ash Mawer insists it’s business as usual for the defending Tasmanian Netball League champions.

She is a four-time Tasmania Netball League MVP and two-time defending champion, but Northern Hawks goal-shooter Ash Mawer believes there could be a new challenger for her crown as Tasmania’s best.

And she could come from within her own club.

The Hawks, who have lost key leaders Danielle Pickett and Gemma Poke in the off-season, have recruited strongly in the mid-court, adding Cavaliers underage star Ellie Marshall.

Marshall, 17, proved an exciting prospect in the Under-19s competition last season and finished the year representing Tasmania at the Australian Netball Championships.

The young gun will be a key player this TNL season, a year in which the match of the round every week will be streamed live and exclusive on KommunityTV.

“Even though she is quite young, she has a standout work ethic,” Mawer said of her teammate.

“She has worked really hard in the gym and worked on her fitness.

“You can’t tell that she is only 17. The composure that she has on the court and the ability to pick off the ball cleanly, she definitely belongs in Opens.

“I think what we do really well is play as a united team and we support each other on court. The girls around her in Lydia Coote and Steph Walker, who have plenty of experience, are the ones that will help her to fit in to our side, which she is doing already.”

The Hawks have lost plenty of experience and leadership since last year’s grand final in life members Pickett and Poke, while they also have a new coach at the helm in Alicia Sargeant.

But Mawer said it was business as usual for the defending champions, even if training sessions had a slightly different spin to them.

“We are doing the same basics, but the drills are a bit different. I guess different coaches have that different flair,” Mawer said.

“It is still at that same high intensity.

“Losing Gem and Dan, filling those gaps is not going to be easy. We have lost two life members, two players who have played that amount of games. You can definitely tell that they have gone, but there are people in the team who have stepped up.

“We have high expectations as a team, given where we have finished and we would like to build on that.”

The Hawks will open their 2023 season against Karana Flames, while the club’s first live streamed game on KommunityTV will be in Round 4 when they face TNL newcomers SE Suns on April 1.

The Suns, who are based in Sorell on the state’s south coast, will headline the first exclusive live streamed fixture in Round 1 when they clash with Kingston on March 17.
