South Adelaide veteran Jess Paradiso and Maggie Kerr have blown away early an over eager Oakdale to set up an unassailable lead in their Netball SA Premier League clash.

Paradiso, a former league MVP, was in stunning touch as Kerr and her dominated on the back of some precision passing, with the Panthers running out 56-46 winners to remain unbeaten this season.

The Panthers were very deliberate with their ball movement and strategically superior by taking the pace off as they went forward.

This practice paid dividends, with Oakdale never really able to reel in the deficit.

South Adelaide owned the final minutes of the first quarter as Paradiso and Kerr took control and blew out the margin by seven goals.

The Panthers then maintained the status quo for the remainder of the contest.

Paradiso finished the game with 29 goals, while Kerr chimed in with 27 of her own.

The visitors did have moments of ascendancy, but South Adelaide would always raise the tempo with a quick reply to regularly frustrate their opposition.

Oakdale’s constant stream of unforced errors also worked heavily in South Adelaide’s favour. Olivia Nicholls found herself caught up in many contact calls.

Oakdale shooter Asha Thurlow (30 goals) finished strongly, but the game was long gone, while Kayla Howes, who came on in the second quarter, was serviceable with 17 goals.

Oakdale did extract a little bit of revenge later in the evening when it broke clear of the Panthers in the reserves to take it out 56-48.

PREVIEW

They emerged with victory from a tough opener last week, now South Adelaide are looking to make it two from two when they face Oakdale in their 2024 Netball SA Premier League clash on Friday night.

Oakdale are sure to be a tough opponent though, especially after shooter Asha Thurlow scored 48 goals to lead her club to a big 67-48 win over Tango in round one.

But former league MVP and current star South Adelaide attacker, Jess Paradiso, said her side was ready for the test as they continue to put the painful memory of last year’s one-goal preliminary final exit to Matrics behind them.

All the action from Friday night’s Premier League and Reserves double header will be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on The Advertiser website and KommunityTV from 7pm.

“That preliminary final result was a really tough one to swallow and I know the girls who were involved have been motivated to take the next step and play in a grand final,” Paradiso said.

“It’s always a hard one against Oakdale. Last year the match-ups were really even, so it’s going to be a lot about working out our processes and figuring out how to respond to errors or adversity.

“We know they’re a talented side and we’ll have to stop the feeds into Asha Thurlow who is obviously quite a weapon, but we’re confident we can get a result.”

Paradiso’s Panthers faced a tough test against Garville last week, winning 51-48 after holding off an inspired comeback by the underdog in the final quarter.

She believed the clash was a good test of the side’s resilience this year.

“We were up for the majority of the game but they really came back at us in the last quarter and it was a bit of a scare,” Paradiso said.

“I think a big thing for us this year is going to be the belief we have as a team. It’s also about the desire to win games when they get close and not letting those games get away from us, so we were very excited with the result.

“We’ve brought in players like Lauren Gibbons this year who has a lot of Premier League experience, so I think we’re going to show some maturity in those moments.”

The Panthers will be eager to continue their momentum ahead of a big round three clash against Contax on May 1.

Paradiso said continuing to pick up results would be integral in such a competitive league.

“I definitely feel we are good enough to go a long way this season providing we continue to bring our A game,” she said.

“It’s definitely always about the wins. It’s really important to continue to get results and keep pushing to be as good as we can.”
