Hayley McDougall smashed through the 500-goal mark for the season, but whether her heroics will be enough to secure the Cavaliers second spot on the TNL ladder won’t be known until next weekend.

The prolific sharpshooter needed 58 goals to pass the milestone. Instead she shot a season and competition high 81 as the Cavs blitzed their opponents 98-23.

While the percentage boost will certainly help them in achieving their top two goal, rivals Cripps Waratah, who edged out Cavaliers on Saturday, do have the chance of overtaking them when they face second from bottom SE Suns next Friday night.

Cavaliers likely secured a top two finish in the U19 Tasmanian Netball League competition after completing their preliminary round obligations with a routine win over Karana Flames.

The 78-35 success, achieved on the back of Sophie Brewer’s 45 goals, means the Cavs finish on 19 points.

Third place Cripps are two points behind and face bottom side SE Suns next weekend. They could conceivably catch them, but will need a massive win to make up for the percentage difference.

Hawks, who have the bye this round, will finish first.

PREVIEW

The equation has become simple for the Cavaliers.

They need to win, and do it convincingly, against Karana in the final round to lock-up a second chance shot in the semi-finals.

But to do it, they will need to overcome a tough Round 13 loss, and quickly.

The Cavaliers will clash with the last-placed Flames on Sunday morning, in a revised date for their final round clash. The double header, which gets underway with the 19-and-Under clash from 9.30am, will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.

The Cavaliers sit in second-place behind the high-flying Hawks, but it is only on percentage after Cripps Waratah scored a decisive blow in the race for second-place on Saturday.

The Cripps side brilliantly fought their way from behind in the final quarter to shock the Cavaliers, outscoring their opponents 15-8 in the home stretch on Saturday.

The result ensured the sides will head to the final round level on eight wins each.

With the Hawks on the bye, and Cripps taking on South-East Suns next Friday night, the mission for the Cavaliers is to finish off the regular season with a bang against Karana.

The Flames, who are coming off a tough loss to the Hawks on Saturday afternoon, will come into the game with nothing to lose as they aim to finish the season on the right note.

The top two finish will become even more important for the Cavaliers when the Tasmanian Netball League finals kick off next month, giving the team a second-chance opportunity in the qualifying final.

Hawks made the most of that advantage last season, losing to Cavaliers in the semi-final, before returning serve in a brilliant grand final display to lock up a fourth-straight premiership.
