SOPHIE Munchenberg and Tayla Dawkins put away hat tricks as the Adelaide/Hobart Jets shocked the Hunter Hurricanes 8-2 in the Australian Water Polo League.

Despite being winless for most of the regular season, the Jets women had not given up hope going into the penultimate weekend of the competition.

The combined outfit, which included the best players from Tasmania and South Australia, had shown plenty of times they had the fight to match it with the better sides.

But it was not until their clash with the Hurricanes, where the Jets found the execution to make good on the promise they had shown.

Jets driver Tahlia Scippione also found the back of the net on two occasions as the Jets scored their first win in the AWL.

The Jets men’s side could not replicate what their women had achieved, going down in a two-goal thriller to the Hurricanes.

Despite hat tricks to both Sam McKenzie and Nicholas Maddern, the Jets couldn’t find the killer blow in the final quarter as the Hurricanes notched a 13-10 win at the Hobart Acquatic Centre.

It is the second time a clash between the two sides has gone down to the wire after the Hurricanes won their early season showdown 11-10.

The Jets remain narrowly clear of the Victorian Phoenix at the bottom of the AWL ladder, but will face a tough assignment against third-placed Sydney Uni Lions in the final round.

MATCH PREVIEW: Winless Jets desperate to find lift-off

DESPITE being winless after the first 12 games of the Australian Waterpolo League, Adelaide-Hobart Jets player Lily Zeeman says the team are enjoying the experience of playing the best the country has to offer.

Ahead of their matchup with the Hunter Hurricanes in Hobart this weekend - which will be streamed by the Mercury- Zeeman, 22, said playing in the elite national competition was a great learning curve for her and her young teammates.

“The competition is obviously a lot different to playing club level in Hobart,” Zeeman said.

“The level is a lot higher and it’s almost a different game in some respects.

“Everyone is a lot stronger and faster and you really have to work a lot harder to protect the ball.”

While the Jets are yet to win any of their first 12 games Zeeman said the morale was still high within the group due to the low expectations they put on themselves as such a young side.

“Seeing as we are quite a young team and don’t really get to train together at all we don’t really have any expectations on ourselves and really just take each game as it comes.

“Our most recent game was one of your best and closest yet and so the fact we know we are playing better as a team now helps with the fact we aren’t winning games.”

The Jets will have their best chance at recording its maiden AWL victory this weekend when they clash with the Hunter Hurricanes in two matches in Hobart.

The Hurricanes have won just one of its 12 matches to date and will present the Jets with a huge opportunity to avoid a winless season.

Zeeman said there were mixed emotions coming into the matchup, feeling more pressure to get the win against a fellow lowly placed side.

“A lot of the girls are excited for the game as we feel we’ll be able to match them a bit more than the other experience teams in the competition.

“So we probably are more confident than normal but also a bit more nervous as there’s a bit more to lose since there’s more of an expectation for us to go well against them.”
