Mabel Park SHS five-eighth Titus Marsden kicked a last-second field goal as his side claimed a miracle 17-16 Langer Reserves grand final win over a gutted Ipswich SHS.

Marsden kicked a 35m drop goal with no time left as Mabel climbed over Ipswich in a dramatic finale.

Ipswich had led 12-0 and 16-4, but No.6 Marsden was twice a late hero - once for his field goal and another for a chip kick, just seconds earlier, which forced a turnover of possession.

Marsden joined front row giant Motootua Kia in chasing the kick and forcing a mistake which handed Mabel Park possession for their final, successful tilt for victory.

Prop Kia was enormous in the second half.

With Ipswich down to 12 men following a sin-binning, Kia scored a blockbusting front rower’s try, a rousing 10m surge which scattered Ipswich defenders like ninepins. His try, and Matt Joyce’s conversion, narrowed the deficit to 16-14.

Joyce also had ice in his veins when he calmly landed a penalty kick 10 minutes remaining that levelled the scores 16-all.

Earlier, Ipswich made the running, dominating to such an extent that it took 19 minutes before Mabel had a set of six on the attack.

It was Ipswich who opened the scoring in spectacular fashion with a quick passing move to the left side saw Quincy Paese around his opponent and put his winger, Caesar Yeatman, away. Yeatman then found support on the inside where Tyler Theuerkauf finished a 50m movement.

Centre Theuerkauf was in again not long after, a splendid 15m individual burst propelling him over. Ethan Court kicked both conversions and Ipswich led 12-0.

Through the first half, Mabel’s brave defence was led by No.13 Dominic Ierome who zeroed in on his targets with gusto.

Mabel did well to stay in touch, down 16-8 by halftime after tries by winger Tyson McDonald and hooker Tayvius Peo, who burrowed over.

PREVIEW

Two blue collar teams, Ipswich SHS and Mabel Park SHS, have surged into Wednesday’s Langer Trophy Reserves on the back of old fashioned hard work.

Both earned places in the grand final by winning against quality opposition (Keebra Park and PBC) in this week’s big wet - and they would not have had it any other way.

Ipswich, coached by Jonathan Dore and co-captained by unsung backs Jed Anderson and

Isaiah Pene, have played tough, effort based footy this season.

“We have had a squad of 25, a group of players who have made it into the side through hard work and effort,’’ Dore said.

“They have come through as a team built on effort more than talent - not that I am saying they are not talented.’’

Dore said his side has soaked up the tough stuff, which was evident in the semi-finals when he set them the challenge of being physical and dictating defence - and they achieved this task.

“We were clinical in a wet game,’’ Dore said.

Mabel Park SHS rugby league co-ordinator Ronaldo Tago said the side had “evolved immensely from the start of the season to where we are now’’.

He said after a slow start which included a loss to Ipswich SHS, “the boys started to buy in more to the culture of what we are building at Mabel Park and it reflected when we went down to Tugun to beat PBC 36-24’’.

“The team really started to band together and play for each other and we went from strength to strength each week which was reflected in results.

“The boys have a lot of self-belief now and are all in it together which is right where I need them to be heading in to the grand final.’’

Tago said Mabel Park’s appearance in the grand final was further evidence the rugby league program at the school was progressing.

“The depth we now have is a testimony to the work of all involved in the program, both staff and students for collectively buying into the team culture,’’ he said.
