Cairns Brothers romped to victory in its A-Grade clash against Kangaroos in round 4 of the FNQRL on Saturday.
The Brothers second-half domination was key to victory, overcoming an opening try to Kangaroos star Daniel Woodhouse to score three of the next four.
From there, they piled on five more and went seven for seven on their conversions to romp to a 46-10 victory.
Meanwhile, a chip-and-chase in final play with the game hanging in the balance delivered the Kangaroos a thrilling 20-12 reserve grade victory over Brothers.
“We’re pretty stoked with the result, it was a good win,” Brothers player-coach Jordan Biondi-Odo said.
“But more so than the result, we’re pleased with the way we played.
“It was our best performance of the year. We just got back to playing our style of footy, which is a bit more grinding and getting you in an arm wrestle.
“We stuck to the game plan even when the game started to come a bit easier in the second half.”
While the team has started 3-0 with a bye in their first four rounds, Biondi-Odo emphasised that his group isn’t getting complacent.
“We know Kangaroos had a few boys out, and I’m sure the next time we face them they’ll be a stronger outfit to contend with,” he said.
“We’ve got reasons to stay motivated each week, they’re working for the lad next to them, but at the end of the day the motivation is just to keep getting better each week and make sure we peak at the right time of the season.”
Biondi-Odo shouted out lock Tom Spark and his teammate in the halves Falcon Peni for their performances, but said overall it was a terrific team display that got them the victory.

Kangaroos held a slender two-point lead at the death and produced a piece of magic to seal victory.
Half TJ Koka accelerated into half a gap before flashing a chip kick over the defensive line, finding backrower George Fauid on the full in space.
The backrower bounced out of the attempted tackle by fullback Tesharne Gibson Kapigeno to secure the try of the day and raise his side to a 2-1 record early in the season.
Zechariah Gibuma, Sario Nakata and Gabriel Wood had scored the earlier tries before Fauid put a resounding full stop on the Round 3 match.
Brothers had earlier held out a fast-finishing Kangaroos in the under-19s, escaping Vico Oval with an 18-16 victory.
Brothers had led 18-6 with 25 minutes to play but were forced into a desperate last stand when Roos centre Jakobi Addo and flying outside back McFarlane Misi cut the gap to two.
Five-eighth Yagan Jacob bamboozled the defence with a weaving run before unleashing a cut-out pass for Addo to finish on the left edge.
Misi’s try began with wicked pace down the left wing and was sealed with a booming left-foot step and right-hand fend to finish by the posts.
Those back-to-back scores when minutes apart and turned the momentum of the match on its head.
A sin-binning to Kangaroos forward Carl Henry-Coutts helped Brothers maintain their advantage to the final whistle.
In the women’s fixture, fearsome Kangaroos backrow trio of Kayla Ward, Rylee Wallace and Genavie Tabuai helped steamroll Mossman for a 56-4 victory.
Mossman’s goalline defence was badly exposed with many Roos runners left to face minimal resistance at the tryline – and on occasion, none at all as vacant ruck defence allowed the Roos to stroll in untouched from close range.
No.13 Ward finished with a hard-running hat-trick, combining well with stocky hooker Isabel Kennedy, while the size and strength of edge forwards Wallace and Tabuai’s overwhelmed the defence at nearly every turn.
Mossman appeared up for the first early when winger Ferlene David crossed in the 12th minute to cut the deficit to 6-4.
50 unanswered points from the mighty Kangaroos doubled the club’s season points differential in a single afternoon.

PREVIEW
Kangaroos hope to lock down Far North Queensland Rugby League’s leading side when they clash on Saturday, according to playing coach Brad Stephen.
Brothers will travel to Vico Oval to take on Kangaroos in a highly-anticipated battle between a pair of top four sides.
The A-grade, reserves, under-19 and women’s matches will all be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of the season-long FNQRL coverage.
Stephen said his side was up for the challenge posed by the three-time defending A-grade premiers.
“The boys are raring to go, we had a good training session on Tuesday and we’ll keep building into the weekend,” Stephen said.
After a disappointing round one loss to Southern Suburbs, Kangaroos have been red hot in their past two fixtures, beating Yarrabah and Innisfail.
“It’s been a good start to the season, the boys are really bought into what’s been put in place by the coaches,” Stephen said.
“(Brothers) are always the team to beat, everyone wants to turn up for their game against them.
“But at the same time, we don’t want things to change too much. We take each week as it comes.
“We want to lock in defensively, it’s easier to score 40 but if you’re giving up 42 then what’s the point?”
He identified a pair of Northern Pride players as ones to look out for come Saturday’s clash.
“Lachie Magill (second row) has been really impressive so far, he had that pre-season with the Pride and it’s done him a lot of good,” Stephen said.
“I’m also looking at someone like Travis Cornthwaite (five-eighth) who is another Pride player, we’ve loved his playmaking abilities out of the halves.”
The reserves clash will be a rematch of last year’s grand final, which Kangaroos won 22-12 in an exciting contest.
Live stream action begins with the Kangaroos women against Mossman from 1.30pm, followed by the U19s (3pm) and reserves (4.30pm) before the big A-grade clash at 6pm.
Every match will be exclusively on KommunityTV.
