Victoria have won their first-ever futsal national open men’s title after defeating NSW Thunder 4-3 in a captivating final in Melbourne.

Two saves in the dying stages from Victorian goalkeeper and captain Christos Apostolakis led his side to a stunning victory.

Victoria had a dream start with three goals in six minutes through Frano Saric, Andre Caro Salve and Kevin Robert Messis Dos Santo to give the home side the early advantage.

The game wasn’t over though as NSW Thunder fought back through Henrique Pimenta and Jordan Guerreiro who made it 3-2 before halftime.

An accidental own goal extended Victoria’s lead to 4-2 immediately after halftime, edging them closer to victory.

But NSW Thunder’s Michael Kouta kept the game alive when he scored in the 39th minute from a Shervin Keshavarz Adeli assist, cutting Victoria’s lead to 4-3.

Scott Rogan almost sealed the game for Victoria when he hit the post in the 31st and 38th minutes.

Skipper Apostolakis put in the last effort for Victoria with two big saves in the final 90 seconds to give the hosts the national title.

Victoria coach Sam Mlynarz was overwhelmed following the win.

“It was out of this world,” Mlynarz said.

“No Victoria men’s team has done this in the last 20 to 30 years, so for this squad to come together, full of talent, words can’t describe it.”

Mlynarz was excited for the future of Victorian futsal.

“They (NSW Thunder) have been the benchmark, so it’s time to show them that we can really play down south.”

Mlynarz was also pleased with how his players faced the pressure of NSW Thunder in the game.

“The fact that we were able to hold our nerve under the pressure,” he said.

“NSW came at us for the full 40 minutes, especially that last 10 minutes, it felt like forever.”

Mlynarz credited the game of his captain Apostolakis.

“He has been the best keeper in country for a number of years, just hasn’t got the call up to the national team,” he said.

“But it’s too obvious now, surely he has got to be picked.”

Apostolakis said was proud of his side.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Apostolakis said.

“We were very confident in the group that we had, but we knew NSW in the finals was going to be an extremely tough game, as it was in the group stages.

“And to get over the line in the end, it feels amazing.”

Apostolakis was pleased with his side’s start to the game.

“I think the start that we got off to was really good,” he said

“NSW are so strong defensively and to get three goals early really set us up for the win.

NSW Thunder are the first open women national futsal champions in more than 10 years after defeating Capital 4-1 in an extra-time thriller on pitch 5 in Melbourne.

After a nailbiting regulation time, which saw impeccable defence from both sides to keep the scoreline at 1-1 for 33 minutes, the match was sent to extra-time to decide the winner.

A penalty in the second minute of extra-time gave Thunder the early 2-1 advantage before two goals in two minutes from Samantha Nagy sealed the victory.

The goals were flying in the first 10 minutes of the game, with NSW Thunder scoring the first goal (sixth minute) through Sheiden Jabour who tapped in a nice cut back pass from Alexia Karry-Stahl.

The next goal didn’t arrive until the second minute of extra-time when a penalty was given from scrappy play and Daisy Arrowsmith scored to give NSW Thunder a 2-1 advantage.

It was all NSW Thunder from there.

NSW Thunder coach Robert Varela was proud of the team for winning the national trophy after more than 10 years without the competition.

“There hasn’t been an open men’s or women’s competition for a long time, so to win it after a long period is very pleasing for the girls,” Varela said.

“It’s a very young team, we have a couple of the girls that could have played in the youth team.”

Varela was pleased his side stuck to the game plan and were rewarded in the end with three extra-time goals.

“We had a hard game last night so we’re physically not 100 per cent,” he said.

“We had a game plan, our game plan is to press the front, create mistakes and then go forward with the ball.

“They are a good side but we knew if we played to our best, we should go away with a result.

“Yes, it took a little bit longer than we wanted it to be but I’m very happy for the girls.

“They worked really hard at training and it’s good to see that it paid off.”

“They have worked so hard, they have done all the right things all week, they’re a great bunch of guys and they have just done a great job so pretty happy.”

Asked about the players who impressed him, McCone was complimentary of all his players.

“It’s hard to pick out one player to be honest, it’s the whole team” he said.

“At different times I have needed them for different things.

“And every time I have asked anyone of them, they have all just gone out and done their job so it’s very hard to pick a player.

“Captain Dunia Kambona has done really well, like he has had an exceptional tournament.

“Apart from him I couldn’t pick out anybody else.”

McCone credited Football Queensland futsal manager Vince Sciacca for his work in preparing the teams before and during the nationals.

“As a state coming down Vince has done a remarkable job with the whole lot,” he said.

“Everybody has come down and everybody is happy.

“I think we had seven team go into the grand final today, you can’t really ask for much more than that.

“It’s just a great effort.”

McCone said the Queenslanders bought into futsal in Queensland and showed great commitment.
