Even more incredibly for the side, they haven’t conceded a goal at the other end of the field with their last line of defence rarely penetrated on Saturday.

Their efforts capped off a big day for the home region, with Sunraysia sitting near the top of the table in the Under-16 boys and girls and Under-18 boys and girls divisions.

The region’s Under-18 girls have only conceded one goal across two games to start the tournament, showing their skill in a three-goal shut-out of Gippsland to open their account.

PREVIEW

Victorian Junior Country Football Championships organiser Neville Keen said numbers for juniors competing in this year’s event in Mildura will jump by up to 300 players this year, rising from 1100 to 1400.

“We’ve got more youngsters playing in the under-age groups, that’s for sure, which is our under-11s and under-12s,” he said.

“There’s a few more girls teams as well.”

It’s impressive considering Mildura, for some regions, is a bigger challenge to get to compared to Ballarat.

“It’s a bit of a surprise,” Keen said.

Teams from all over the state and beyond will hit Mildura over the King’s Birthday weekend.
Teams from all over the state and beyond will hit Mildura over the King’s Birthday weekend.

“If you are weighed down in Warrnambool or LaTrobe Valley, that’s a fair hike to get there for three days.”

Some families will be staying for an extra night, on Monday, to counter for the extra travel, according to Keen.

He said the organisers are on track to host a fantastic carnival.

“They are progressing really well,” Keen said.

“The expectation is they will put on a good event for us.

“Mildura hosting is a win, win from all sides of the fence.”

Teams from Mildura, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Albury/Wodonga, LaTrobe Valley, Gippsland, Shepparton and Warrnambool are all expected to compete.

The tournament starts on Saturday, June 8.

Keep an eye out over the next few days for more articles on the event and how you can live stream the action.
