Live stream: Watch two courts from the Basketball Tasmania Mid-Winter Classic

The brightest young guns from across Tasmania have shown up in a big way on the opening day of the Mid-Winter Classic. Watch the REPLAYS from Saturday.

Glenorchy young gun Riley Causby might be playing an age group up in the Under-16s but she is showing no signs of fear at the Basketball Tasmania Mid-Winter Classic.

Causby has averaged more than 17 points per game over the opening rounds as the Glenorchy side sit atop Pool B undefeated after day one of the tournament.

The orange and blacks pulled off a dominant 53-point win over Deloraine to open their tournament, before backing it up with a fighting win over Grenadiers.

It was one of the highlight matches on a big opening day of basketball at the Mid-Winter Classic.

KommunityTV exclusively live-streamed the action from two courts at Elphin Sports Centre, with action across every age division on show.

Under-18 Boys Div 2 side Devils Veldhuis and Leslie were another of the big winners on the opening day of the tournament, ending the day with a 42-37 win over New Norfolk Pistols.

Jett Casboult has hit double digits in both of the side’s day one wins, and will be determined to keep his scoring rate up going into finals day on Sunday.

Launceston Lightning young gun Campbell Waterhouse also enjoyed a fantastic start to the classic, scoring 40 points in three games to help guide Launceston City to an undefeated start in the Under-18 boys division one.

The Mid-Winter Classic features the best young ballers from across the state in the U12, U14, U16 and U18 divisions.

The KommunityTV coverage will include every match from Courts 3 and 4 at the Elphin Sports Centre. That’s an impressive 48 games. Action starts at 9am each morning.

The tournament concludes with a big day of finals action on Sunday, with the KommunityTV coverage featuring a number of grand finals across both Division 1 and Division 2.

The Mid-Winter Classic, which was formally known as the Launceston Classic, is a participation-focused event and open to all clubs across the state.

Almost 140 teams competed across 293 games last year, and Basketball Tasmania is preparing for a similar onslaught this year.

The sheer size of the tournament, and lack of one single facility to handle it, with matches played at Elphin Sports Centre, the Silverdome, Launceston College and St Patrick’s College, has prompted Basketball Tasmania to reignite calls for better infrastructure in the north.

“There’s a couple of thousand people descending on Launceston in the middle of winter. It’s a significant injection into the Launceston economy,” Basketball Tasmania CEO Ben Smith said.

“Not that we’ve had to turn any teams away, but the schedule is really punishing. They can start at 8am, and finish at 7pm… for kids, it is a long day.”
