Defending boys champions Victoria have kicked off their title defence with an impressive hard fought win over Queensland – the same side they defeated to claim last year’s nationals.
The 94-86 victory came largely off the back of a blistering third-quarter display from Victorian star Ned Renfree (25 points and three rebounds) who tore the Queensland defence to shreds in a 19-minute purple patch.
It was one of six Show Court games at the Basketball Australia Under-20 & Ivor Burge National Championships live streamed on KommunityTV on Tuesday.
With stars Dash Daniels (eight points, five rebounds and two assists) and Luke Fennell (12 points, four rebounds and three assists) held relatively quiet, it was Renfree that led the way.
The Victoria Navy boys development side then showed they could also be a genuine contender with an entertaining 111-100 victory over Tasmania.
After a back and forth first-half, Navy went into the final break with a 16-point lead but the gutsy Tasmanian side wouldn’t go down without a fight.
The boys from the Apple Isle went on a 13-0 run to start the final quarter, cutting the margin to three, before young gun Austin Foxwell drained his eighth three for the game to extend the margin back to 90-84 and give the eventual victors the buffer they needed.
Foxwell finished with 32 points while Jacob Furphy had a huge 41 point showing in defeat.
In the first girls clash on show court, it was New South Wales who put up a comfortable first up win over Victoria Navy.
The clash had all the makings of a red-time thriller but a tantalising showing on the defensive end in the final quarter from the victors restricted Victoria Navy to just four points.
NSW young gun Jessie-May Hall (20 points, three rebounds and three assists) top scored in the 95-64 win.
Reigning women’s champs Victoria edged out SA by eight points to get their tournament off to a positive start on the back of a 15-point, 11-rebound and three-steal performance from Manuela Puoch.
The Croweaters did find some opening day success however, taking care of the ACT 90-80 with Patrick D’Arcy (24 points) and Rio Bruton (23) the standouts.
In the final match of the day WA secured a 99-77 victory over Tasmania.

PREVIEW
Fans won’t have to wait long for arguably the most anticipated men’s match of the 2025 Basketball Australia Under-20 and Ivor Burge National Championships.
The tournament will get underway in Ballarat with a grand final rematch between Victoria and Queensland kicking off the action on the Show Court from 9am on Tuesday.
The two sides battled it out to a thrilling finish in 2024 and while the reigning champs in Victoria will head into the tournament as favourites to defend their title, an early upset against a Queensland side intent on revenge wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
Check out today’s LIVE STREAM schedule below.
The Victorian Navy side will then take the court against Tasmania from 11am, with the development side hoping to flex their muscles against a Tasmanian outfit led by two of Australia’s brightest young talents.
Recently signed University of Connecticut guard Jacob Furphy and Nash Walker, a multiple time national representative, will be crucial to Tasmania’s chances in Ballarat and will want to get their side off to a winning start on Tuesday.
Women’s action will then take centre stage from 1pm with star young gun Jessie-May Hall set to lead New South Wales into battle against Victoria Navy.
After a third-place finish in 2024, New South Wales will be intent on proving they can challenge for gold 12 months later with a first-up win against the development side from Victoria.
The ‘big sisters’ will then take to the floor with the defending Victorian champs facing South Australia from 3pm in a rematch of 2024’s gold medal clash.
Men’s action will then return to close out the opening day with the ACT to face South Australia and Tasmania taking on Western Australia.
Every match of the Basketball Australia Under-20 and Ivor Burge National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from January 28 – February 2.
