Jacob Smith kicked six goals and Kobe Bennett four as SFL finals hopefuls Sorell boosted their percentages with a massive win over Claremont.

Third-place Sorell took the match 163-2, scoring 48 times in the process, but only 23 of those were majors.

Claremont didn’t score their first point until the third quarter as their season-long losing streak extends to 10 games.

PREVIEW

After missing out last year, Sorell are gunning for the SFL finals, but for Claremont, simply winning a game would be a ‘grand final’.

For Sorell, the clash with Claremont at Pembroke Park on Saturday is all about ‘ticking that box’ as a platform for their massive test against Cygnet at Cygnet Oval on Saturday week.

But for big Magpie Brad Davies, a win would be a huge reward for his developing team, which is yet to get the four points this season.

“It would be massive for the group,” Davies said.

“Everyone goes out to win, but we understand where we are at and our focus is not necessarily on winning games, but it would be fantastic to win one this year.

“It would really help with the confident of these young players that we’ve got.

“Our main focus is making sure we are turning up and are doing the right things, ticking all the boxes, doing the small things we need to do, sticking to our structure, playing our way, and just giving effort.

“We know that over time, that is going to hold us in good stead.”

Davies believes Claremont can get that win by the end of the season.

“It was really disappointing against Hobart - we thought we were in with a chance for a win that game,” he said.

“But we fell away from the things we’d worked hard on during the year - the way we want to set up, the way we want to play.

“We’re looking to the second half of the year and we’ve got a couple of games in mind that we believe we can win.

“We definitely play better at home, so we a definitely excited about the second half of the season.”

Eagles midfielder Myles Sawford says Sorell is full of confidence after beating Huonville Lions last time out.

“It was a massive scalp to knock off Huonville,” Sawford said.

“We hadn’t done that in years and it has given us that confidence to move forward and start taking a few more big scalps.

“We are still a developing side but we hoping to push for that third spot.”

The Eagles are wary of the Magpies.

“Claremont are a developing side and we can’t underestimate them,” Sawford said.

“They did kick seven goals against Lindisfarne, which has a very good defence, and seven goals is enough to win a game, so we have got to be on top of our game.”

The Eagles expect to get skipper Alex Jones (finger) and Joe Bateman (ankle) back from injury.

“They’ll hopefully be big inclusions for us this week,” Sawford said.

In other round 10 games, New Norfolk plays Cygnet at Boyer Oval, Lindisfarne is at home to Dodges Ferry, and Hobart plays Brighton at the TCA ground.
