It was 30 years almost to the day since Parade’s iconic back-to-back Shield triumph, and while the faces might be different the result wasn’t for the proud Victorian nursery. Watch the Herlad Sun Shield REPLAYS.

Parade College has won back-to-back senior Herald Sun Shields in commanding fashion after knocking of Emmanuel College by 73 points at ETU Stadium.

Parade started with a bang led by skipper Zak Johnson, piling on seven goals to two in the opening quarter that put their Warrrnambool opponents immediately on the back foot.

Emmanuel kept it at a five-goal margin halftime but the third quarter was all Parade, keeping Emmanuel goalless and booting another five goals to put the result beyond doubt.

Parade ran out victors 17.11 (113) to 5.10 (40).

There were no shortage of contributors from the Bundoora-based Parade, with Johnson and Kristian Lawson dominating in the midfield, Angus Smith (three goals) providing a strong marking presence and small forwards Seb Murphy (three) and Jordyn Gillard (two) providing serious forward impact.

Vic Metro representative and state combine invitee Johnson finished with the best-on-ground medal around his neck, booting two goals and starring with his burst from congestion and incredible overhead marking.

For Emmanuel it was vice-captain Reggie Mast who was their clear best, impressing in a variety of roles with his strong marking standing out.

GWV Rebels bottom-ager Charlie McKinnon could have kicked a bag in an eye-catching outing up forward but finished with 3.3, while Amon Radley kept potential second-round draft prospect Tom Sims quiet.

NORTHERN KNIGHTS 2.0

It was always going to be tough for Emmanuel playing against a side stacked with top-end talent.

Parade was essentially Northern Knights 2.0 with 14 players on their Coates Talent League list.

Parade player Noah Scott also plays for the Calder Cannons.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel had just the six players from the GWV Rebels

EMANNUEL HORN

A few Emmanuel students made the long trip up from Warrnambool and they provided some light entertainment for onlookers.

Stationed Emmanuel’s attacking 50, they made Parade earn every kick, mark and handball by blowing a horn whenever they marked or disposed of the ball.

But spectators didn’t hear much from them in the third term, though, when the ball lived in Parade’s forward half.

PREVIEW

Parade College will be hoping history can repeat itself, while Emmanuel College will just be determined to create their own slice of it.

It’s time for the Herald Sun Shield senior grand final.

Reigning champions Parade College will aim to scale the mountain for the second-straight year when they clash with Emmanuel College at ETU Stadium.

The game will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from 12.30pm as part of our coverage of the Herald Sun Shield finals series.

It could be a moment 30 years in the making for Parade, who are aiming to emulate their Herald Sun Shield double from the 1993-94 seasons, exactly three decades later.

The Parade team of those back-to-back titles featured future AFL stalwarts like Daniel Harford, Jared Molloy and Blake Caracella.

But what sort of future guns could this year’s Parade side hold, and how about their fierce grand final rivals Emmanuel College - a school which has a track record of producing guns like Lions three-time premiership hero Jonathan Brown.

The Herald Sun spoke to the coaches of both schools to find out which players you need to keep an eye on in the decider.

JORDYN GILLARD, Parade College

The midfielder won best-on-ground honours in the Associated Catholic Colleges grand final win over St Patrick’s Ballarat and will be looking to repeat his performance in the Herald Sun Shield decider. Has played 10 Coates League games for Northern Knights this season and made his senior local footy debut for Montmorency.

OLLY MYERS, Emmanuel College

The Emmanuel captain. Coach Chris McLaren estimates he may have already played “60 or 70 senior games” for local club Port Fairy. The inside mid with the Jason Horne-Francis look will be a danger at stoppage and around goals. Represented the Hampton league under-23s against Ballarat in July.

TOM SIMS, Parade College

The 199cm key forward missed the semi-final but returns to bolster Parade for the decider. The AFL Draft prospect has been invited to the national combine in October. Has kicked 22 goals in 11 outings for Northern Knights this season and made four appearances for Vic Metro.

TALOR BRYNE, Emmanuel College

Made his senior local footy debut for Koroit as a 15-year-old under school coach Chris McLaren. The solidly built inside midfielder has been a driving force for Emmanuel throughout its School Sport Victoria campaign. Played eight games for GWV Rebels this season as well as 10 for Koroit.

SEB MURPHY. Parade College

Won the best-on-ground medal in last year’s intermediate premiership and has seamlessly stepped into the senior team this season. Still eligible for under-17s but has still played 11 games for Northern Knights this season and regularly been amongst the best.

REGGIE MAST, Emmanuel College

The 189cm swingman is capable of playing key roles at either end of the ground or even ruck. Has been a consistent performer for GWV Rebels this season, making 13 appearances as well as five for local club Warrnambool.

RILEY ORMEROD, Parade College

Was one of Parade’s best in its thumping 118-point semi-final win over Padua College. Eye-catching off a half-back flank or wing with his run-and-carry and delivery into attack. Will be a key link man for Parade in the decider. Has played 13 games for Northern Knights and made his senior debut for Banyule this year.

AMON RADLEY, Emmanuel College

At 193cm, tag-teams with Mast in the key positions and looms as a major cog in Emmanuel’s plans. Has been hampered by injury this season, limiting him to three Coates League matches for GWV Rebels and eight games for Warrnambool. However, fit and firing he’ll be hard to stop.

ZAK JOHNSON, Parade College

The Parade captain returns after missing out on the semi-final. One of the best midfielders in the Coates League and represented Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships. Made his senior local footy debut for Old Ivanhoe last year but has concentrated on pathway footy this season, making 10 appearances for the Northern Knights.

CHARLIE McKINNON, Emmanuel College

Kicked the match-winner in the dying minutes of the semi-final against Ballarat Grammar to continue his sensational form from the School Sports Victoria campaign. Played Vic Country Under-16s last year and has spent time in defence for GWV Rebels but looms as Emmanuel’s main attacking threat in the grand final.

Currently co-coach at Northern league club Banyule. Helped the Bears claim the Division 2 premiership in 2022. Previously led Bundoora to a Division 1 title in 2017 and has worked in Essendon’s VFL program.

Chris McLaren (Emmanuel)

Led Koroit to a hat-trick of Hampden league premierships in 2017, 2018, 2019 – the second three of a six-peat. A 300-game great at the Saints. Took the reins at Emmanuel in 2020 and has also worked in the Greater Western Victorian Rebels program.
