Geelong Falcons had no answer to the Whitlock twins as Murray Bushrangers pulled off a Coates Talent League boys upset at Highgate Reserve on Sunday.

With Victoria Country coach Paul Corrigan watching on ahead of the upcoming national championships, Jack and Matt both kicked two goals as the seventh-place Bushrangers led at every change to beat the second-place Falcons by 29 points, 64-35.

Lachlan Miotto and Joe Berry got the Bushrangers off to a flying start, kicking early goals to hand the home side a 17-1 advantage.

Leigham Elzinga got the visitors’ first - and added a second in the second term - to keep Geelong in touch, but with the Whitlocks and Berry keeping the scoreboard ticking over, the Bushrangers were never really threatened.

PREVIEW

The Geelong Falcons and Murray Bushrangers will clash on Sunday in what will be a final audition before Vic Country’s first match of the national championships.

And with the squad yet to be named before their championships opener against South Australia, both sides will be looking to put their best foot forward.

But the Bushrangers find themselves in an unique situation where they will be looking to impress the opposition coach Paul Corrigan, who also coaches Vic Country.

“It’s not all to do with me, off the back of recruiters as well,” Corrigan said with a laugh.

Liam Kershaw (centre) will be out to impress on Sunday.

“But it will be nice to watch a lot of those players and see how they perform and then see where we can line them up in Vic Country if they get that opportunity.

“When we name that squad for Vic Country, it won’t just be that squad that is carried through for the whole championships, we sort of thought that we can keep a rolling list with what we do.”

The Falcons thumped the Bushrangers by 51 points in their last meeting in round three but Corrigan estimates almost half of their side will be different this time around.

The biggest of those outs is the Coates Talent League leading goalkicker Will McLachlan, who was taken by Brisbane in last night’s mid-season draft.

Vic Country squad contenders Lachie Jaques, Edan Ibbetson, Zac McInnes and Liam Kershaw, who was overlooked in the mid-season draft, will be among those to watch out for.

The key to victory for the Falcons will be stopping twin towers Matt and Jack Whitlock.

Matt Whitlock had impressed in defence early this season but has joined his twin brother in the forward 50, kicking two bags of five in his past three matches.

“They have been in the Vic Country hub and been very strong performers to this point of the year,” Corrigan said.

“We will have our work cut out there for our talls which will be great match-ups.”
