Replay: St Mary's Star of the Sea v Endeavour Sports (Girls) – AFL NSW /ACT Tier 2 Senior Schools Cup State Finals

Played in near gale-force conditions, Hunter Sports High School have exacted revenge after last year’s narrow grand final loss in the AFL NSW/ACT Tier 2 Senior Schools Cup State Finals.

The Hunter representative entered the competition determined to make up for their heartbreaking one-point loss in last year’s decider.

And, despite there not being a grand final this year, with aggregate wins deciding the champion, went about their business in emphatic fashion.

They were clearly the standout side as they amassed five wins from five games at Tuggerah.

While most failed to handle the trying conditions, Hunter’s boys held a distinct skill advantage, with several of their players arguably destined for bigger things.

South Coast representative St John’s Nowra finished second, succumbing only to the overall winners, while NNSW side Saint John Paul College joined them on the podium with three wins.

Greater Sydney representative Endeavour Sports High claimed the girls’ division in thrilling circumstances.

A draw against Central Coast side St Peters Catholic was enough to give them the overall title with three-and-a-half wins.

Runner-up, NNSW side Bishop Druitt College, finished two points adrift with three wins, while Hunter representative Hunter Sports High School claimed third.

The high winds meant it wasn’t the high-possession, silky skills and straight-running contests one would usually associate with this level.

There was the occasional high score among the 25 games, but the difficult playing conditions were reflected on the scoresheets.

Scoring in most games favoured one end of the ground as players did their best to negotiate an environment not favourable for quality football.

Five girls teams and six boys teams played off in a round-robin format at the Central Coast Regional Sporting & Recreation Complex.

PREVIEW

Some of the best young players in the state are ready to make their mark at the AFL NSW/ACT Tier 2 Senior Schools Cup State Finals at Tuggerah on Wednesday.

Five girls teams and six boys teams from as far afield as Coffs Harbour, Nowra and Wollongong will play off in a round robin format from 10am at the Central Coast Regional Sporting & Recreation Complex.

You can catch all 25 games LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV across three fields.

The AFL NSW/ACT Tier 2 Senior Schools Cup State Finals are set to be the last hurrah for many of the St Peter’s College, Tuggerah open girls team as they are set to graduate at the end of this year.

Their coach, Jacob Hawkins, said the girls want their final competition as a team to be the best yet.

“I think, for them, anything other than a win would kind of be a disappointment,” Hawkins said.

“But they also understand that there’s going to be some quality students out there and other schools have been quite strong in the past.

“So their expectations are just to go out there and give it their best shot. If they walk out with the chocolates at the end of the day, it’s been successful.”

Hawkins said the team is packed full of talent, but there are two girls in particular he’s excited to see perform.

“Taya White, she’s playing out of her skin at the moment,” Hawkins said.

“She’s actually recently been invited to be part of the AFLW Sydney Swans train on squad.

“Brooke Turner is another one playing seniors at the moment at Killarney Vale and she’s been part of the Swans Academy in the past.”

St Peter’s also has their open boys team competing in the finals, with many of the players part of last year’s U15 NSW State Championship-winning squad.

However, Hawkins said the team may not be at full strength.

“We’ve actually had a few injuries in the lead up to this competition,” he said.

The Hunter Sports boys team is ready to give the competition a real shake.

“So we’re kind of scratching at the moment to get a few players together and waiting on injuries.

“But hopefully we get a good run and get a bit of luck on our side.

“Nevertheless, the boys are keen and they’re ready to go.”

Meanwhile, the Hunter Sports boys and girls team will look the competition a real shake, especially on the back of the boys’ heartbreaking one-point loss in last year’s final.

Leading the way will be the exciting midfielder Joe Harrison.

Harrison, who is part of the Swans Academy and plays for the Warners Bay Bulldogs in the local competition, is currently part of the Allies side at the U18 national championships.

He is definitely a strong candidate to be drafted by an AFL team in November.

The team also has some quality players like Taj Barton, Tahi Brain, Zach Urisich, Coen Clarke, Lincoln Chambers, Louis Skinner and current captain Gabe Bose.

The girls team features the likes of Cardiff Hawks stars Brooklyn McElevey-Hicks and Eliza Georgalis, who have both been part of the Swans Academy this year.

Emma McCallum, Holly Winter and Liv Ward will also be players to look out for.
