The Devils dominated the clash at KGV Oval, defeating the Cannons 17.9 (111) to 6.5 (41).
The win – coupled with previously top-placed Sandringham’s loss to the Northern Knights on Saturday – meant Tasmania moved to first on the boys ladder heading into the final minor round next weekend.
PREVIEW
Finals like footy is officially on the radar of the Tassie Devils and Calder Cannons.
The two sides will face off in a huge Coates Talent League boys game on Sunday, which will help shape the top-four race.
The game will be live streamed on KommunityTV from 12.30pm when the two sides meet in Tasmania.
Tassie currently sits second, one game behind ladder leader Sandringham, with the Cannons eyeing off a spot in the top-four in fifth spot.
If the Victorian side were to come away with the four points, they would move closer to earning the double chance with just one game left to play.
Both sides are littered with plenty of talented players who will be on the AFL Draft radar for years to come.
With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at the key players from each side.
Tom Beaumont, Tassie Devils
Hasn’t got the attention of some of his teammates but the midfielder is enjoying an impressive season averaging 24 disposals and a goal a game. Has gone back to Tasmanian State League level in the past few weeks and was named among the better players for his home club, Launceston.
Jack Callinan, Tassie Devils
Has been a little quieter in front of goal in recent weeks but Callinan is still playing a key role.
Jordan Croft, Calder Cannons
The key forward prospect is enjoying a strong season and looks to be an intriguing prospect for AFL clubs. Hitting the scoreboard is one thing, but Croft’s contested marking can be a huge point of difference in these types of games.
Hugo Garcia, Calder Cannons
Averaging 122 SuperCoach points this season as a mid-forward. Garcia is capable of finding plenty of footy and over a goal a game.
Damon Hollow, Calder Cannons
Hollow has spent more time in the midfield in recent weeks and it has paid huge dividends as he has shown off his ball winning ability.
Isaac Kako, Calder Cannons
An AFL Draft prospect for next season, Kako is coming off a sensational performance in a loss to the Bushrangers where he kicked four goals and had 20 disposals.
Colby McKercher, Tassie Devils
The sky is the limit for this young man. McKercher is the state’s best-rated product ahead of this year’s draft and is enjoying a standout season. He’s averaging 33 disposals and a goal a game across seven outings.
Beau Nash, Tassie Devils
One of the unsung heroes of the Devils midfield. Nash had arguably his best game of the season last time out with 31 disposals. Often finds himself in his side’s scoring chains.
Arie Schoenmaker, Tassie Devils
Coming off a monster performance against Oakleigh in round 13, Schoenmaker will play a key role in defence this weekend. Reads the ball well and can take plenty of intercept marks.
Mahmoud Taha, Calder Cannons
Eligible to be drafted this year, Taha has improved with every outing for the Cannons, averaging 28.2 disposals. Brings plenty of pressure with his tackling.
