A big second half paved the way for Geelong Falcons to upstage second-place Eastern Ranges in a vital Coates Talent League girls encounter on Sunday.

Down players due to representative commitments, the Ranges rallied to reduce the margin to just 10 points at halftime, but they couldn’t match it with the Falcons after the main break.

Geelong piled on 46-21 in the final two terms to take the match 83-48. Their win has put them right back into the final hunt ahead of big games against Tassie Devils and Oakleigh Chargers.

Two late goals would have left Sandringham nervous, but they ultimately did just enough to see off the determined challenge of Eastern Ranges in a tough Coates Talent League boys contest.

Down by 16 with five minutes remaining, the Ranges came home hard, and when Jordan Hider scored from a set shot, there was suddenly only four points in it.

Time beat the Ranges in the end and the Dragons held on to secure a 49-45 victory, which keeps them in the hunt for a top two finish with just five rounds left.

On paper, Geelong should be the stronger of the two sides in the girls’ game, with the Falcons having access to their Victoria Country players this weekend.

Several Falcons including Seisia White, Chloe Bryant, Sara Howley, Mekah Morrissy, Rebecca Clottey and Stella Huxtable have been included in the squad for Country’s under-18 national championship campaign, which gets underway on July 7.

With Eastern players qualifying for Vic Metro selection, Ranges could be without several key players as Metro’s campaign kicks off this weekend.

The seventh-place Falcons will look to continue their winning ways after beating Murray Bushrangers by 25 points last weekend.

Seisia White (headgear) could be available for Geelong on Sunday.

They are currently in a run where they face the top three teams in successive rounds. After the clash with second-place Ranges they face top side Oakleigh Chargers and then third-place Tassie Devils.

Meanwhile, Eastern Ranges showcased their power with a 75-point thumping of the Western Jets and have now won five games in a row.

In the boy’s game, both sides will be without key players as the under-18 national boys championships continue.

Third-place Sandringham have won their last two games in fine style while the Ranges have mixed their form in the last month or so, with a 2-2 record since mid-May.
