PREVIEW

While a change of coach mid-season may become a challenge to overcome for some, that hasn’t been the case for an in-form Gippsland Power girls’ side.

Currently sitting 7-2 on the Coates Talent League ladder, they’ll face the Greater Western Victoria Rebels on Sunday in what is coach Michel Farmer’s second game at the helm.

The Power v Rebels clash will be available live and exclusive from 11am, as apart of KommunityTV’s Coates Talent League Sunday double-header.

The GWV Rebels v Oakleigh Chargers boys clash will follow from 1.10pm.

Farmer was appointed after Nathan Boyd took up a new role as the Dandenong Stingrays’ girls coach mid-season.

Farmer started his Power tenure on a winning note against an Eastern Ranges side missing its Vic Metro players last weekend.

“We had a bye so he had a couple of weeks to get to know the girls, and our game against Eastern last weekend was his first game, it was a really good game of footy to watch,” McDougal said of Farmer.

“We’ve been steadily improving throughout the year, it’s hard when you lose a coach, but the way the girls came together and decided nothing was going to get in their way from stopping them achieving what they’d set out to achieve.

“The training standards were maintained, to some extent they’ve actually lifted and become closer over those three or four weeks while we waited to appoint Michael, and Michael’s walked into a group that’s eager and ready to learn, ready to execute.

“Whenever there’s a change there’s a challenge and whenever there’s a challenge it goes one of two ways, our girls have really stepped up to the plate.”

Vic Country trio Chelsea Sutton, Baia Pugh, and Grace Dillow have been strong in the midfield, providing plenty of “bite” on or around the ball.

Maya Crestani, Sbby Hobson and Ella Stoddard, who are all in the Vic Country squad, have impressed too.

Cretsani, who is a ruck, has been “really influential in (Gippsland’s) ability to compete around the ground”.

“Ella Stoddard working back and getting the ball out as one of our prime movers has been really influential (in defence) as well,” McDougal added.

Hobson has been potent in the air.

“Our defence, while it’s a bit – not underrated – they’re blue collar,” McDougal said.

“They get in and they do the work and they bring it to ground and they look after each other.”
