After more than 650 days of despair, the Tigers have finally ended the drought.

Hobart finally clawed their way to the club’s first win of the SFL Seniors season and the Tigers did it in style.

In front of a vocal home crowd, the Tigers proved too good for fellow winless outfit Claremont Magpies, running out 46-point victors.

Hobart led from the opening whistle, but they saved their best for the final quarter, booting three goals and 22 points as they ran away with the contest 11.22 (88) to 6.6 (42).

Young goal sneak Blake Smith was an energizer bunny for the Tigers, bobbing up across half-forward and booting two giant goals including one from beyond the 50m circle to put an exclamation mark on the contest.

While there was plenty to celebrate for the Tigers, and those celebrations deserve to go long into the night, there will be some concern around execution on goal with the side converting only a third of their scoring shots.

The Magpies will be left to lick their wounds, and wonder where their first win will come from, after taking their winless streak to six games this season with almost 1400 points scored against them.

In the battle of two winless SFL Senior Reserves sides, it was Claremont who emerged with the four competition points after pulling off a 28-point success over Hobart.

The 49-21 scoreline was a welcome respite for both teams considering they have had trouble containing opponents to scores under 150 points in their opening games this season.

PREVIEW

With Hobart gunning for their first win in 623 days when they take on another rebuilding club, Claremont, at the TCA Ground on Saturday, coach Dan Gray has warned his Tigers there will be no reward without effort.

In a reboot season after going into recess last year, Hobart is yet to win a game as the club re-establishes itself in the SFL.

Claremont are also winless after the first five rounds, so the prize for the victor is huge as they both look to climb the ladder.

“There’s obviously going to be some external noise around a couple of cellar dwellers battling it out like a couple of old pugilists,” Gray said.

“But for us it’s just another week to improve, gain some extra fitness and to have a look at another mix of players.

“The theme for the whole week is maximum effort.

“If that means we’re in front when the final bell rings that would be great, because losing heavily a lot can take its toll on the psyche.”

Hobart’s last win came in August 2022, ironically against Claremont by 17 points at Abbotsfield Park.

It will be the first time the two clubs have met since then.

“It would be pretty meaningful to win this week,” Gray said.

“It has been a long season to date, and for the whole club generally because it’s a lot of energy to lose and by a lot, so it would be nice for the lads to celebrate something.

“But if you don’t put in the effort you’re going to come up short.”

Hobart’s team will change for the six game in a row.

“We have four players to come back - Ozzie Warmbrunn and Will Lyon would be the main ones,” Gray said.

“They have both been out for a few weeks with injury so it will be good to get them back in the midfield.”

Gray is laying the foundation for Hobart’s future.

“My job has been about trying to identify good characters,” he said.

“That has been from the get-go and it hasn’t changed.

“It’s just a matter of finding those good characters, and personally I will play people with good character over a better footballer with maybe not the right mindset.”
