It was a goal-kicking shoot-out between two of the SFL Premier League’s best bigmen at the Twin Ovals on Saturday with Tiger Tyler Carter and Magpie Bryce Alomes kicking 11 majors between them as Kingborough clinched a seven-point win that boosted them to third on the ladder.
For Kingborough it was a much-needed win that burst Glenorchy’s bubble _ the Pies were shooting for their fourth victory in a row _ in a win that signaled the Tigers had rediscovered their bite.
It was a cracking contest peppered with special goals, elite marking and even a sickening head-clash between two Glenorchy players, and when the dust settled the Tigers came out in top in a thriller.
They climbed into equal third with Glenorchy and North Hobart, but sit on the top of that trio with their superior percentage.
Kingborough coach Trent Baumeler said it was just reward for the work his players had put in.
“Our boys have been battling away and they’ve shown some great resilience over the past few weeks,” he said.
“Against North Hobart we were down by three goals a couple of times and nearly came back and pinched it.
“Brighton had us on the ropes at one stage as well, but this group keeps coming back.
“Last round we were 50 points down against Clarence at half-time and we put ourselves in a position to win the game at three quarter-time.”
Kingborough is missing some key soldiers but that has open the door for other players who Baumeler says have deserved their opportunity, and have taken it.
“We are a little but undermanned because a few injuries but it just speaks to the resilience of the group,” he said.
“So it was a really good win and they deserved it for the work they’ve put in and the way they have attacked their footy over the past few weeks.”
Carter kicked a bag of six, which made all the difference to the result, while Alomes kicked five and almost stole the show for the visitors.
The surprise packet was Kingborough’s hardman winger Pat Harnwell.
He kicked four goals, including the first two of the second-half, and was so damaging it forced Glenorchy to tag him, while Marty Brereton stood up in key moments, particularly in the final term.
At North Hobart Oval, ladder-leader Lauderdale had a field day in attack, which included a 12-goal third term and a bag of nine goals by Sam Siggins in the Bombers’ 115-point win.
At Pontville Oval, second-placed Clarence had a 98-point win over Brighton, with Brodie Speed kicking six, and best-afield Daniel Cooney and Josh Green kicking four apiece for the Roos, while Darcy Gardner booted three of the Robins.
Next week is a bye round for the SFL-NTFA representative game.
