Tasmania’s AFL license coup is already translating to greater participation at the grassroots, with NAB Auskick numbers already enjoying an increase as more youngsters pick up a Sherrin.

The number of girls in the introductory, non-contact program for children aged five to 12 in particular has grown. Female participation is up 12 per cent from the same time last year and accounts for 18pc of the more than 2000 in the state who have registered, a four per cent jump from 12 months ago.

The numbers would be encouraging for officials who hope the AFL’s newest franchise beginning in 2028 as well as an AFLW team at a yet-to-be-decided time, will inspire youngsters to take up the sport.

The introduction of the JackJumpers has already resulted in an explosion in participation for basketball, and one of the AFL’s major focuses in establishing the Tasmania license was a renewed push to ensure the sport is played in all schools.

“It’s such an exciting time for footy in Tasmania, and there’s no better time to get involved in our great game through NAB AFL Auskick,” AFL Tasmania’s football development manager Linsey Da Costa said.

“It’s terrific to see Auskick numbers on the up, with female participation up 12 per cent across the state compared to this time last year.

“Auskick centres are run by passionate volunteers who foster a safe and inclusive environment that encourages friendship, physical activity and having a go.”

The Auskick season has started but children can still sign up before May 31. By using the code 736E47EE they will a receive a $28 discount off of their registration fee.
