He is the busiest man in Tasmanian football but senior academy coach Jeromey Webberley would not have it any other way as he prepares his state team to take on Queensland at Latrobe on Saturday.

Webberley is now the coach of three state teams heading into the fourth instalment of five men’s senior academy games this season.

The coach of the men’s state team and Coates Talent League Devils Boys under-18 team, Webberley has also inherited the role as coach of the Devils’ Coates Talent League Girls after the resignation of Jess Wuetschner two weeks ago.

“It has been a busy few weeks, but I’ve probably been lucky with the scheduling,” Webberley said.

“The boys are in recess period for a month, and the senior academy hasn’t been going essentially, so I’ve been committed to the girls for the past few weeks.”

The workload sparked a debate about Webberley’s workload.

“There were discussions about it but we felt that once we got through July 19 with the last game for the senior state team, a lot of the burdens would ease,” he said.

“It’s going to be a big month but I am enjoying what I am doing.”

Tasmania opened its academy series against SANFL club Norwood at the beginning of March, followed that three weeks later with game two against Frankston, then Sandringham at the start of May.

The state teams are back in action this weekend after a break for the Tasmanian Representative Series between regional teams.

“It has been fantastic to reconnect with the senior men’s program and some of the players that I have coached during the Devils and Clarence, and who I’ve coached against and played against,” Webberley said.

“I wasn’t keen to give up the senior stuff.

“Although I knew it was going to be a really busy month in July I, was keen to keep forging forward.”

Taking on the Devils Girls was almost a seamless fit.

“Right in the middle of the year I do work with the girls program anyway as art of my role,” Webberley said.

“So we felt like it was easiest transition for the girls to keep that continuity within our program.”

Tasmania is gunning for its third consecutive win over Queensland, having beaten the Maroons at North Hobart Oval in 2023 and again at Bond University Oval last year.

“They are going to have some great playing talent, and they play a different game-style to us,” Webberley said.

“Queensland has got really big grounds, and it’s drier, so they play fast footy.

“Down here it’s freezing cold so the ball movement is a bit smaller, and we are more contest and defence-based and they are probably more open and free-flowing.

“It’s another opportunity for us to go up against a really good team.”
