Former tennis star Jelena Dokic has revealed a small detail in a photo that led to her receiving online “abuse”.
Dokic is very prolific on Instagram and innocently shared with her 150,000 followers a photo of her flying home business class from her European holiday.
She wrote that she’d “recharged” and “recovered” from her break and added a photo of her enjoying the perks of business class — like the leg room and delicious food.
The response to the photo was mostly positive.
“Fabulous,” one fan commented.
“Enjoy your business flight! It is your money, and you can spend it any way that you want. Your holiday snaps were amazing,” another praised.
However, days after she’d posted the photo, she took to Instagram to explain she wanted to “address” the negative feedback she’d faced over the image.
“I posted a couple of images of flying back from Europe, flying back home to Australia in business class. A few people have had an issue with that,” she said.
Dokic said that she’d been accused of “showing off” and not being “humble” and noted that these comments weren’t acceptable.
“I’m a big believer in, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” she said.
Dokic also explained that she realised she wasn’t everyone’s “cup of tea” but also pointed out that the response she’d received was still “social media abuse.”
“I think for people to judge and shame people for posting something. It is mean, and it is a type of social media abuse,” she vented.
Dokic clarified that most comments were kind and supportive but revealed that she didn’t think that meant she should have to ignore the cruel minority.
Dokic is no stranger to having to deal with online hate. She went viral earlier this year in January because she was trolled over her weight gain.
Dokic was working as a commentator for The Australian Open when she was hit with brutal online hate for not being the same size she was when she was an athlete in her early twenties.
She also took to social media to address the online trolling and called it “disgusting” and begged for people to stop.
“I can’t believe I have to address this again! I am being body-shamed again and I am seeing comments and even articles about my weight and appearance. Its disgusting behaviour,” Dokic wrote on Instagram.
“This is a serious problem and one that women face all the time. I have said it before and will say it again: STOP COMMENTING ON MY WEIGHT AND SIZE. It is not kind, and it’s ignorant.”
