NEXT BEST

VALUE

Race 8 No. 4: Tokyo Ice

Very consistent mare who has been in some strong races lately.

INSIDE MAIL - SCONE

RACE 5

Last Frontier has won three of his five starts, was third and fifth at the other two and both of them enormous runs in their own right. This will be a good measuring stick for trainer Cody Morgan given it is the best field the horse has raced in to date. That said, we might lose a few along the way. Smart And Dapper has also accepted for the Sunday Spring at Coonabarabran. The siblings, Very Sharp and Sharp Shock will be missiles late.

Bet: Last Frontier to win

RACE 6

Finca is a filly with a bright future. She is by So You Think out of an O’Reilly mare with dam sires like Shirley Heights and Roberto on the page. By rights, she should run 2000m at some point. It is 1200m here but she is on debut on a big and thus suitable track. Rodney Northam/Reece Jones local Antilocapra has looked the part in her two Muswellbrook trials in May and October. Another good trialler was Powerful Dragon.

Bet: Finca to win, Antilocapra each-way, box trifecta 3, 6, 12, 13

RACE 7

Like Lukey is a Kris Lees-trained Denman mare who has placed at three of her four starts; her unplaced run was on debut in a race won by Captain Furai. Comfortable from 1200m up to 1600m so 1400m fresh, two trials, makes him very easy to like. Keep At ‘Em was $21 to $41 on debut and was way better than that, finishing fifth of 10 in that 1250m Newcastle Maiden. Extra trip suits. Haberfield is a nice prospect with a not so nice barrier.

Bet: Like Lukey to win, exacta 4 to beat 7

RACE 8

Eclair Encore is a Japanese-bred filly from the Kris Lees stable. Not sure if it is all that relevant, but she was nominated for the Thousand Guineas which is on November 16. Not impossible she’s there on the day. All things being equal, she has to perform here at this level. King’s Duty has finished fifth at his last three and they have all been huge runs; particularly the Jungle Juice one as recently as last Saturday. Shen Gui is in great nick it seems; can never be ruled out, especially at home.

Bet: Eclair Encore to win, exacta 10 to beat 3

INSIDE MAIL - QUEANBEYAN

RACE 5

Les Goh will apparently be saved for the Highway on Saturday so all roads, well most anyway, seem to lead to Mischief In Dubai who was herself scratched from a race at Scone to run here instead. Form reads well; maybe just a ‘luck’ thing from barrier one. Consider It Done has raced twice for the new management, winning one and finishing a very close third here on October 13 and carried 60.5kg both times. Geostorm and Zariz No Water are in the mix.

Bet: Les Goh (unlikely), so quinella 2, 4

RACE 6

Condominium is a Gerry Harvey-bred and owned mare from one of the great families in the Studbook. Her fourth dam is Verdi (Hot Rhythm) whom if memory serves, were long time foundation mares at Baramul in its pre-Harvey days. Got to like this mare off her trials and the draw. Pretty Cheeky was pretty disappointing on debut but it is way too early to sack her. Reward For Eric has been consistent to a fault in his four starts. Circle of Love is an improver.

Bet: Condominium to win, box trifecta 2, 5, 9, 10, Daily Double 1st Leg (5), 2nd Leg (4)

Gatchan can add to his good record at Queanbeyan. Picture: Bradley Photos

RACE 7

Gatchan has an overall record of two wins and four placings from 22 starts but it is worth noting that she has raced at Queanbeyan three times for a win and a second. That second happened to be as recently as Oct 12 and it was by the barest of margins. Hurricane Coni was fifth to Gatchan in Canberra on Sept 28 then went to Goulburn and won. Has drawn well here at home. Ditto that for Where Is Ken who is back to a mile (tick).

Bet: Gatchan to win

RACE 8

Tokyo Ice is a sparingly-raced six-year-old mare who has just the 11 starts on her resume for two wins and five placings. The one thing that stands out most about her, of late at least, is that she has been running in some decent races; she split Asurito and Laguna Seca two back and then was third to My Last Hooray and Kissing Supido here after that. Stands to reason that if you like Tokyo Ice, you probably have to also like Kissing Supido.

Bet: Tokyo Ice to win, exacta 1 to beat 4
