Jockey banned after fellow rider Bailey Rogerson, 24, left in coma
A jockey has been handed a suspension after an act that left young female rider Bailey Rogerson in a coma and fighting for her life.
A 24-year-old jockey is fighting for her life in hospital after a horrendous fall, as the jockey who caused the disaster was given a big ban.
Bailey Rogerson, the granddaughter of a Melbourne Cup-winning trainer, is in an induced coma in a New Zealand hospital, The Sun reports.
She remains in intensive care after coming off Mandolo in the sixth race at the Arawa Park meeting.
Rogerson suffered a fractured skull in the fall, and doctors placed her in a coma amid fears of a possible brain bleed.
Doctors are waiting to determine if she suffered additional broken bones.
Legendary grandfather Graeme Rogerson, who trained 2007 Cup winner Efficient, said Bailey’s mum, Michelle Northcott, had not left her side.
“She is in an induced coma, but they are going to try to bring her out of that on Monday,” he said.
“She has a fracture in her skull, and there might also be a broken bone in her neck region, but they haven’t been able to X-ray her for that yet.
“But she has movement in her limbs, so that is good news.
“We will know more today when she is brought out of the coma, and obviously, we are all very worried. But she is very tough.”
French rider Corentin Berge has been suspended for a month by stewards for “allowing his mount to dangerously move out and eventually check Rogerson’s horse”.
Bailey rode her 58th career winner earlier in the day when Burnished saluted in the Waitomo Fuels 1400m.
