Melbourne Saturday Review: Caulfield Guineas

Godolphin trainer James Cummings has yet to formalise a jockey for Broadsiding in the Cox Plate, should the colt proceed to Australia’s best race on October 27.

Three-time Group 1-winner Broadsiding ran fourth in the Caulfield Guineas last Saturday, unsuited by a track pattern which appeared to play in favour of horses on the speed.

“I have made inroads without getting too carried away,” Cummings said when questioned about a jockey booking.

“Someone is going to want to ride him and we’re going to want to run him and he’s got to be absolutely booming and then we’ll go from there.”

Star jockey Jamie Kah and Sydney rising star Zac Lloyd are in the mix to ride Broadsiding at 49.5kg.

Cummings, pleased with the run last Saturday given the circumstances, stopped short of any definitive Cox Plate declarations.

“As always we just work out what we’re doing and go from there,” Cummings said.

“One thing I know is the horse isn’t going to pull up badly from a run like that.

“He’s had a good dig, he really did his best to pick up, get around Caulfield and find the line strongly, he did all those things right, you can’t just make it happen.

“No doubt in my mind he’ll be better again for the run and he’s building towards something, we’ll meet and decide what that special something might be.”

Broadsiding eased $5 to $8 with Ladbrokes for the Cox Plate after the Caulfield Guineas.

Champion jockey James McDonald said Broadsiding remained “on track” despite the defeat.

“Take nothing away from the winners, they had tactical speed and they made advantage of that ... unfortunately for us, Broadsiding being an off pace runner, we went two furlongs and had no chance,” McDonald told 7 Horse Racing.

“Unfortunately we weren’t dished up a fair track today and we were the victims of that.

“He’s well on track, the horse ran enormous and in fairness as well he probably... was a victim of Caulfield first time too, he swapped and changed legs a couple of times and wasn’t entirely comfortable (in the straight until) the last 50m.”
