Well-bred filly who has trialled well. Hope barrier 1 is a blessing not a curse.

Brother to Russian Revolution. Not as good as him but definitely has talent.

VALUE

JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

Tommy Berry will popular in the TAB Jockeys Challenge

GOULBURN

BEST BET

Race 1 No. 11: Xcessive Force

Brutal filly on debut. Trialled very well indeed, Barrier 3, limit weight.

LISMORE

BEST BET

Race 3 No. 1: Irish Gift

Placed three from five and in better races than this too.

INSIDE MAIL - CANTERBURY

RACE 1

Heesen is the eighth foal of her dam, Zimaretto. All seven of the others are winners, three won stakes races. As for Heeson, she makes her debut off the back of two excellent trials. The key here is barrier 1. On paper it is a blessing but how many times does it turn out to be a curse? Red Envelope wears the colours of her close relative, Typhoon Tracy. Trials are a bit inconclusive but she has a great draw. Stagnum is well-bred, great trials.

Bet: Heesen to win

RACE 2

Everybody Rise resumes as a gelding. He was a $1.4 million Easter Yearling. He is a full brother to Russian Revolution and a close relation to Home Affairs. Placed at three of his five starts so far. Couldn’t have trialled any better. Madam Instrife is a daughter of the aforementioned Russian Revolution. Placed at all three runs and was arguably the ‘run of the race’ at all three too. Wild Annie hasn’t trialled like a $21 shot.

Bet: Everybody Rise to win

RACE 3

Ant was $26 out to $61 first-up but is $11 for this one. The story of his run on the Kensington is that he ran so much better than it looks. It was wicked bias and pretty much no horse made an inch of ground in the straight all day. If Canterbury plays fair (and it has been), he can win. Stablemate Cantarito likewise was something of a hidden run on the Kensington last start and she’s had one more run than Ant this prep.

Bet: Ant each-way, exacta 2 to beat 6

RACE 4

Sweet Proposal has also accepted for Randwick on Saturday where she drew 13. She has gate 2 here with 2kg off for Zac Wadick (if she comes). She certainly has done more right than wrong in her 13 starts. That was a great return behind Candlewick. She’s Got Veuve has only won twice in 16 starts but you will be hard pressed to find many times when she hasn’t been competitive. This is her style of race, drawn bad draw though. Valetudo is working up to a win.

Bet: Sweet Proposal to win or if scratched She’s Got Veuve to win or if scratched Valetudo to win

RACE 5

Monarchs Brae is a Canterbury horse. Three of his four wins have been at the venue but with the caveat that they were all over 1900m so maybe I am a run or two too early. But even though this 1550m, bear in mind he is fresh but fit with those two trials. Tommy Berry is a key booking. Bat Out Of Hell has a win and two thirds from three runs at the track and trip. We might lose a few of these so anything goes for third.

Bet: Monarchs Brae to win

RACE 6

Dance To The Boom adds so much interest to this race, all races in fact. We haven’t seen this daughter of Exceedance since she won on debut at Kembla on August 17. She was a tiny bit green but plenty good at the same time. Loving the trials. Not expecting Luxe External to show but keep an eye out for her on Boxing Day at Randwick if she doesn’t come. Apex is another one by Exceedance. This one is race-fit, loaded with talent and desire.

Bet: Dance To The Boom to win

RACE 7

Salisano and Super Bright are from the whole of Australia’s most in-form stable, that’s Nathan Doyle. There wouldn’t be many horses that have trialled any better than Salisano and she’s got the grand first-up record to go with it. Yes, she has the outside draw but we will definitely have scratchings. In terms of the draw, Super Bright has come up with barrier two and believe me, that’s the best she has drawn for ages.

Bet: Salisano to win

RACE 8

Empire Of Art was top pick but looks like he’s off to Randwick on Saturday where he combines with Kerrin McEvoy who rides Star Legacy here for Gary Portelli. This son of Knight Exemplar has finished on the podium at 12 of his 23 starts which is a good stat for those who bet each-way given it’s not like he goes around favourite every start. As for this race, he was inches off a third career win when nosed out by Cheval Savant (runs here also) on the Kensington track 14 days ago.

Bet: Empire Of Art to win so if scratched Star Legacy to win
