Hobart’s NBL1 mid-season acquisition thriving just two weeks into life in Chargers colours

He has only spent two weeks with his Hobart Chargers teammates but Jack Purchase is having as much fun as he has had his entire career joining a free flowing, offensive juggernaut

TWO weeks in Chargers colours is all it has taken for Jack Purchase to declare he is enjoying the environment as much as any of his career.

Hobart’s mid-season NBL1 acquisition has made an immediate impact to the side, which is firing on all cylinders and producing some breathtaking basketball.

The Chargers have poured in 227 points in their past two home matches against Bendigo and Geelong, and have a three-game streak of reaching triple figures on the scoreboard at Kingborough Sports Centre.

Purchase — who signed with Hobart after an NBL stint with Adelaide as an injury replacement player — has hit the ground running since arriving in the state, averaging 16 points, 11 rebounds, 4.5 assists, one block and 1.5 steals in his pair of appearances.

His inclusion, along with exciting guard Tad Dufelmeier, has thrust the Chargers firmly into title contention but it is the brand of basketball under coach Anthony Stewart which has Purchase in no doubt he has landed in the right spot.

“To be honest, it is some of the most fun basketball I have ever played, all I am doing is watching the ball go through the net, we have shooters everywhere,” the 26-year-old said.

“The last two games I’ve looked up at the scoreboard halfway through the second quarter and we’ve been up 15-20 and thought “geez that happened pretty quick”.

“It’s unreal, it is an exciting brand of basketball, I like how ‘Stewie’ operates, he told me it was going to be fast paced, put the ball in the hole and get back on defence type pace.

“I am enjoying it so far. I’ve just come in and tried to bring what I can bring, crash the boards, do the right thing by the team and help out where I can.

“The boys have been unreal.”

Getting to audition under the nose of JackJumpers coach Scott Roth is not adding any extra pressure for Purchase, who is aware of what a solid back-end to the season could bring for his career.

“I think that’s what everyone is doing, trying to put their best foot forward for the NBL1 season so they can have a crack at the NBL.

“It has been a tough couple of years trying to crack the league, I haven’t quite got there yet so hopefully this next season I can get a contract somewhere and start making my way in the NBL.”
