Hobart Hurricanes still chasing the signature of their most powerful batsman

A Hurricanes hero has gone onto the open market after Hobart won its first Big Bash crown. Here’s what the club is doing about retaining its explosive batter.

The Hurricanes have landed several significant re-signings heading into the off-season but there is one player the Hobart BBL franchise is chasing as hard as it can.

Out-of-contract heavy hitter Tim David is on the open market but the Hurricanes hope to seal a deal with the 28-year-old batter in the next few weeks.

Cricket Tasmania boss Dominic Baker said it was one box the reigning Big Bash champion needed to tick.

“We haven’t got his signature yet,” Baker said.

“We are making no secret of the fact that we are working as very hard to ensure we retain Tim David.

“We believe he will stay with us.”

With home-grown talent Beau Webster heading to the Hurricanes for the BBL next summer, championship-winning opener Mitch Owen says he is confident David will stay on the Cane Train.

Owen extended his contract with the Hurricanes three weeks ago, along with express bowler Riley Meredith, both for another three seasons.

Skipper Nathan Ellis and versatile batter Ben McDermott are also signed on for the next three campaigns.

Owen, who debuted with the Hurricanes 18 in BBL|10, believes David will extend his time at the club.

“I really hope he does,” Owen said.

“He’s a massive voice for our team in the change rooms and he’s one of the best in the world at striking the ball.

“I’ve got confidence he will stay, but I don’t have any ‘intel’ on that.”

Owen is still pinching himself about his 39-ball century that powered Hobart to its first Big Bash crown.
